bullet caliber size question

I got another dumb question from a newby. I was at Hyatts Guns shop in Charlotte browsing and picking up a powder funnel. I was looking for bullets and I see no 223 bullets. I see 22 caliber that are sized 224. Is that the right bullet for my 556/223 ar 15.?

.223 was the old 22 Hornet size. .224 is the correct size for your application.

Yep. 22 caliber bullets are .224 in diameter. .222 Rem., .223 Rem., 5.56 NATO, 22-250, 220 Swift and so on all use .224 diameter bullets.

Sit down and get cozy next to the fireplace and read ALL of the chapters in the front of the book. It will save you lots of grief and time.[;)]

Just for fun, I like to count like a shooter...

.218 Bee, .219 Zipper, .220 Swift, .221 Fireball, .222 Remington, .223 Remington, .224 Weatherby, and .225 Winchester
ALL shoot .224" diameter bullets.

But the .22 Remington Jet, .22 Savage High Power, and older .22 Hornets don't.

I was unsure because when I read my Lyman book in the 223 section it says that I use 224 dia bullets for cast bullets. It also says that the groove dia. is 224. Ok that tells me what to use for cast? but what if i am not casting my own but using store bought? and should i not use a smaller bullet than the grooves. of course that is my logical mind thinking which i know i shoud turn off when it comes to reloading,but i got to start somewhere. so thanks to all who help straighten me out.

Another question is my barrel is a 1x9 twwist. does that matter when it comes to the saftey of the load data in the lyman book since it is based on a 1x12 universal & 1x7 colt.

Generally a faster twist will increase pressure. How much depends on the individual rifle. One rifle with a slick 1-7 might give the same pressures as another with a rough 1-12.
