How good is good enough?

gagirlgagirl Member Posts: 5,408
Do you guys have a max grouping distance before you go out. What do you figure is good enough to get out into the woods? Right now I am shooting 6" groups. I downed the draw weight and although I am more comfy shooting at 50#. I was shooting tighter groups with a higher weight. (not going back up I really think I am best staying at #50 for now)Me I get frustrated when I go backwards and I went from averaging 4 in groups to 6... oh well more excuses to be out there practicing right?

I think for hunting 6 inch groups are good. If I had good groups back to 40 yards in 6 inches, i would take that shot if I had a clear lane and the right conditions.

Your groups could have shot better groups because your bow was tuned better for that wieght. Some bows work better at different DWs then they do at others, at least that is what people say.

I do know though that I could easily shoot a higher weight, with different spined arrows, but I like the lower wieght cause I can shoot 100 arrows in a sitting and only get tired around shot 80.

What poundage were you shooting? I only shot 60lbs, I feel like a wimp now [B)]. But even with 60lbs I get more then 60lbsKE, and thats what really important.

I have my mckinzes set up from 20 30 40 yards so if I put all 6 arrows in the vital I'm ok with that.I shoot 71 lbs. This is all from a treestand also.
My groups are the size of a pop/beer can at all 3 yds stated above [:D]
1 shot is all ya get so make it a " SUREKILL " (T/C Encore-/-Contender/ MATHEWS SWITCHBACK Shooter)

You didnt mention how far you are practicing from for the 6 inch groups. I have been bow hunting for 45 plus years, have the most modern equipment, and really hate to hear about people shooting at 40 yards. Too many wounded deer at this range. If you work at hunting as much as shooting, you should never have to take a shot at over 25 yards, and then only occasionally. 50 pounds is plenty, for good kills, and allows you to hold your draw until the best possible shot avails itself. From 40 yards 6 inch groups is great, but from 20-25 yards I think it could be a bit better.

I like to see groups of 7 inches or less, not sure how I ever came up with seven, but weirds things are common for me. [:D]
Also, I rarely will consider a shot outside my 30 yard mark, if I do then everything has to be perfect. The way I see it is if that deer is that close then it will be back again so why risk a poor shot.
50# is plenty for a whitetail.

I know there is someone else here familiar with the Per-fx cam... well with this cam you can simply change a screw position and change the bow from 50-60-70 lbs. Limb bolts for finer tuning as with all other bows. I was shooting at 60 lbs but I like it at 50 better. I am currently shooting 6 in groups at 20 and 25 yards consitantly. Most of yall know that I am still really new at this, but it has become an addiction.

Not sure if group size is the best indicator for your max hunting shot distance. with the right equiptment 6 inch target can be hit a long ways off with some practice.

Consider this. Take one arrow at an unknown distance and put it in the vitals "about 6 inch" of a deer. Do it cold. meaning your first shot of the day. not after you have warmed up with a couple dozen shots. This is what we are working towards with hunting accuracy right?

Now when you do this enough times you will start to limit yourself. You will step up to the unknown distace, cold, and say to your self, I will hit this shot every time, or well.....maybe i'll hit it. If you are saying the later to yourself YOU ARE TOO FAR AWAY!

Suspenion, that is my point, Unless everything was perfect, 30 yards is my limit. With my old bow and fingers, and the crappy way that it shot, I liked to get them as close as I could. I probably didn't feel comfident with a shot over 20 yards cause that bow shot worse then I did. Parents need to send their kids out in the woods with good equipment!

I would think by now you would be hitting a little better then 6in groups at 20-30 yards. Maybe your bow is just slightly out of tune and not getting better groups that way. Although, 6 inch groups for a huntting bow will hit the spot with deadly results.

Shooting is additing. With the bow I purchased over the summer, my comfidence is way up compared to what it used to be and I have been shooting better then ever and I love shooting. The reason I just bought a target bow, just so I could try it out. I also like learning the tuning techniques and stuff. Guess that is the engineer in me.

I personally dont think that 6 in groups are bad after makeing changes to my bow this week. I was shooting within 4 before, have been shooting for less than 1 year and have only had this bow maybe 2 months.

I've had this problem with High country's. What bow are you shooting? For me most of their new bows are just to lite weight to hold steady with out adding a lot of weight. I added almost 2lbs to my carbon four runner to get it steady.

Bub I am a small frame person and the light weight is one of the things that drew me to the HCAs. I have a new carbon TSSR and love it. I made changes. It is not the bow it is me.

gagirl, if you don't have a stabilizer, you should try one. For me, the added weight is worth the "balance" it affords.

i would never go hunting because i was shooting bad groups. before you say that i'm wrong for this, here is my way of thinking about it. if i shoot bad groups at 40 yards and good groups at 20 yards, i will go hunting but wont' shoot anything past 20 yards. as long as you hit a pie plate at the distance you are shooting at, you are good to go. we all ultimately strive for better than that, but that's all you need.

    39 and counting...

I can generally put 3 out of 4 arrows in the circle you can make with your thumb and middle finger. This is assuming I am sober when I am shooting and it is at the beginning of my session, the more pulls I have the less accurate I get due to fatigue I guess. I also crank my bow up for season since generally I only have to pull back once on a deer. Turn it down in the summer and shoot more. thats me though.
