your mistake thread for the year

headzilla97headzilla97 Member Posts: 6,445
What did you learn as a deer hunter this year. I was pondering this the other day watching some tv?

this is what I learned.

1] Your first night in a fresh stand is your best opportunity to bag a deer.

2] Shooting lanes will be cut into all of my stand sites no more using the "I hit a branch excuse"

3] I will scout more during the summer months especially around my house.

4] I will not realie on my climber stand everytime even though it is great. I will hang stand so I can slip in more silently

5] I will hunt behind my house more because i didnt hunt up there untill I saw a slam pig 3 days before gun season. I will "know" before the season if their are any bucks running around.

6] I will hunt in the am at least 5 times I only went out once with the bow in the am.

7] I will gain access to a neighbors brush lot that is deer heaven.

8] I will get my one friend to let me gun hunt his property.

9] the gun will go off during gun season

10] I hope I can have the kind of season I had this year even though I only shot a fawn[:)]

    Okay, Here goes,
1; When a deer drops after shooting at him, ALWAYS assume he is still alive....He was bedding down when I shot, I had missed![V]
2; Always assume deer will come in from behind when in a ground-blind
3; Don't use an antlered decoy for does....
4; Dont climb out of your stand before looking ALL-AROUND
5; buy one of those cough-silencers
6; make my own Deer-view mirror
7; buy a real safety-harness...Baler twine just dont seem safe enough
8; go squirrel hunting around stand more often
9; eliminate ALL raccoons from property
    10; build more comfortable stands.

    Hopefully

Don't leave it up to my dad to scout, he doesn't do that anymore and its really freaking anoying because we have so many spots to hunt, yet don't have a clue about deer in them.

But of course if this year is like last, I will only be in ohio for a handful of days in the year.

    1) don't bother huntin in Jan. they have gotten smarter than I by then.
    2) Get more stands up
    3) don't get to cheap of a stand they are uncomfortable.
    4) Food plots, food plots, food plots. We need to get the deer off the neighbors property.
    5) scout
    6) practice shooting from an elevated position so you don't miss the first deer of season.
    7) If you keep yourself descented forget the wind.
    8) MOST IMPORTANTLY, never share a small cabin or the truck ride back home with 2 other guys that have had chili/mexican/spicey food and beer the night before[xx(].[:D][;)]

I didn't hunt enough to mess up. Everything went as planned. Next year I'm going to try using my hounds to track wounded deer.

    1. i learned to sit in the tree longer on morning hunts

    2. always carry an extra release in my fanny pack

    3. zip my pocket so i don't lose my cell phone for 2 weeks in the woods

    4. bend at the waste instead of in the arms when shooting from a stand

    5. don't get any Code Blue or other urine scent on your hunting clothes or else your cat will pee on your hunting clothes.

    6. don't put your buddy in your best hunting spot

    (6) Put more stands up for myself
    (7) Get out more than 6 times
    (8) Try a morn hunt
    (9) Hoyt's still S#ck [:p]

    1. Don't throw my first thought on stand locations out the window right away.
    2. Plant more food plots
    3. Grow better food plots
    4. Practice more
    5. Always be a little more patient, even after sitting for three hours not seeing a deer.
    6. Get out in the field more no matter what, rain/shine
