No idea why I did it

SuspensionSuspension Member Posts: 4,783
Not sure why I did it because this guy woulda been something nice next year that woulda been worth hanging on the wall. Guess I got all caught up in the moment.
Any tips on cleaning up this skull? I plan on boiling it for 3-4 hours, hoping the teeth don't fall out though.

The girls in the anatomy lab did mine. Since thats what they do I figured they had the stuff and knowledge. They boiled mine for 4 hours then put it in degreaser. Said bleach will make it brittle and do not let the antlers in the water. the nasal pieces came out on mine but again since anatomy is what they do she used some type of purpose made glue to put them back in. Oh and she sprayed some type of coating over it in 2 layers. Oh and, Nice buck, I would have shot him.

This late in the season, it is best to just put her on automatic. I don't blame you one bit, and that ain't that bad of a buck, man.

Bang, degreaser? Like engine degreaser? ps: did you get my email the other week? I keep getting return message failures from your email address.

Thanks everyone. I never hesitated to shoot, but afterwards I kept thinking how dumb it was. It was on my dad's property and has been running his scrape lines there all year, I'd bet a thousand he woulda been back there next year looking all mature and high scoring. [:D] Oh well.

Not sure what kind of degreaser, I never asked but I will. Yep I got the mail. Just keep it in mind when the time rolls around, if you can cool if not no big deal. Maybe we can catch you on the way through to Co. if you go.

I'd appreciate that if you find out the type of degreaser. Maybe I could just run it through the car wash and use engine degreaser. [;)]

Your right, it would be cool. You can bet I'll stop anytime I'm through Illinois.

No hurry Bang. I still haven't started a fire to boil it yet, had some family in the hospital over the last week and I totally forgot about it. Well until I walked into the barn this evening, [xx(], stinky in there now. [:D][:D]

If the teeth fall out you can glue them back in with clear silicon (sp?). My in-laws bioled and bleached both of their 5X5 elk this year. Both look great!

After you boil it you can clean up left over meat with wire brush, (carefully) then put cotton balls all over the skull with peroxide
and it will whiten it, if the cotton starts drying out just pour more peroxide on them.

dcso3009, I've had a couple buddies that tried bleaching their whitetail skulls but it didn't work for them. They just soaked them in regular old bleach. Is there a special technique?

I may not need to clean it up anymore. A teacher friend of mine says there biology class is buying some kind of flesh eating beetles for studies, he said he'd take my head in for them to test with. [^] wonder if they'll mind the stench? [:D]

Susp. she said you really don't need to degrease whitetail skulls. She said that deer skulls are thin and don't have much grease. But FYI it is a commercial product that comes in 55 gal drums. Not available to general public.
She did offer to do it for you if you wanted but then I told her you weren't anywhere close to here.
They used to use the beetles here also, they work pretty well.

    Thanks Buckey!

Bang, appreciate you checking. I'll just leave it go and find out this weekend if he's gonna take it into school for those beetles.
ps: if she's cute I might be able to deliver it. [;)]
    Thanks again!

Dawn dishwashing liquid works ok to clean and remove some grease. You need to pick off the "cling ons" with a knife. For bleaching use hydrogen peroxide, the strong kind from a beauty supply store. I set mine in a glass baking dish, draped the skull with paper towel, and kept it moist by basting with peroxide. Don't get it on the antlers!

Oh yeah, this is after boiling of course. Don't boil too long or the skull will start to fall apart.
