how are you going to prepare the land? A good basic fertilizer will suit your basic needs.

We have tried several types on our lease. Problem for us is that there are so many other fields with soy beans and corn that the food plots are not real effective in my oppinion. We have had a lot of success with cow peas and clover rather than the high priced brands. Good luck!

We use winter wheat and clover. The best thing about it is you can just pull a harrow with a 4 wheeler or tractor and get the land down to bare dirt. Then just spread a mix of winter wheat and clover.
We have done it like this for 2 years now with great results

    Best of luck

Our problem was, the deer ate it all before the plants got growing well and killed them (the plants [:)]). Best food plot we have going is a 20 acre hay field. They are always out there.

Man there was a winter wheat field by our place down south. The deer were always out there. All hours of the day. They'd eat it, then bed in it. We have had decent results with oats. we are still trying different stuff though to see what has the best results.

If you are going to plant smallish plots, invest in PlotSaver. It really does work! However, it starts to get cost and time prohibitive if the food plots are going to be bigger than 1-2 acres.

We always mix wheat, oats, and rye and plant them together. I usually use a commercial forage also. Just to get some other stuff in the mix. Have great results.

Our local sewage treatment plant does an irradiated substance that is a compost type. Since it has human waste in it the deer will stay away from it for 2-3 weeks after put out. We plant and once we see sprouts put out the compost. It gives the plants time to get established prior to being mowed down while young and tender. At $5 a truck load it is a cheap fix. Check with your local sewage plant.
