popup ground blinds

gillespiegillespie Member Posts: 8 ✭✭
Looking for feedback on popup tent type ground blinds. Have never hunted from one and would like to hear of others experience with them, especially the shoot through netting windows type. Interested in data on specific brands and sizes as I am considering purchasing one to bowhunt out of. Also how did animals react to it and how long did it take animals to get used to the blind being there?

I just purchased the Doghouse made by ameristep ,( from Gander Mountain ) cost was $80 should be big enough for 2,,, has shoot thru netting , the clerk is someone I know and is a bow hunter and he said the netting doesn't seem to bother the arrow, hope to find out for myself , i did use another blind last year for gun season it was the Outhouse by ameristep ,,, worked pretty good but was just a tad small for me and my boy , at least it did keep the wind and rain off us , which was a big help [:D]

I don't use pop-ups but, if I were going to buy one there is only one I would consider...Double Bull. They are a bit spendy, however. I have a few buddies that use DBs exclusively, especially bowhunting for gobblers, and I doubt you could get them in anything else.

    Double Bull are the cadillac

Most important thing is to find a queit and comfortable stool, chair, etc to sit on. Hours can get long in them.

I own a Double Bull II blind with shoot through windows. I have used it on a ranch in Texas and ithas plenty of room in it for one hunter and 2 hunters would be OK if your chairs were not to big. I did not take a shot from my blind but I did practice plenty from it. A broadhead is no problem to shoot theough the mesh material. A field point is another story. The field point does not make a big enough hole to let the fletchings pass through and they shoot all over the place. Plains Scout is correct make sure your stool or chair is comfertable or it will be a long wait.
Most blinds need to be backed with some type of bushes that grow in the area, if not a deer seemd to pick them up when they get close.

I have to put in my $.02 for the Double Bull as well. I got one as an early Christmas present in 2001. I don't use it often but I have used it when there is good sign in places were there are no suitable trees to hang a stand. I bow hunt and I have not shot a deer from it, but that was only of my choosing. Had deer walk by and they never knew I was there. I break up the lines of the blind a bit with a few leafy branches.

On the other hand, a buddy of mine had an el cheapo and while we were handgun hunting in '03, he was seen by deer and they move past out of range....didn't * them, they just knew something wasn't right and walked away. He got his deer when he left his stand and moved to the trail that they were using to walk around the blind and sat by a tree. True story. I think there may be something to the camo pattern they use....

I have a Doghouse by ameristep, there are a couple of things I don't like about it 1: the material is very lightweight and moves even in the slightest breeze, be sure to tie it tight to something to prevent this from happening. 2: the material is noisy but hey isn't all nylon. 3: if the metal bands inside get twisted up it can be a real bear to put away had to leave mine set up in the garage last year for six months until I calmed down enough to try it again. Other than thos things it is a great blind.

Oh I forgot my favorite blind is my luckys tent. Made of heavy canvas tall enough to shoot a bow out of. It has large windows. It goes up in 3 seconds absolutely a great blind. I have 3 of thse I just couldn't decide on which camo pattern to get. Here is there website http://www.luckyshuntingblinds.com/

I want a little blind that looks like a potted plant. That way I can hide in it, and move around when the dear aren't looking.
