first time park hunted

bang250bang250 Member Posts: 8,021
Yesterday was opening day for the allerton hunt. This place has never been hunted and they opened it up because of the damage that the deer are doing. Now I knew there would be a lot of deer but I had no idea what I was in for. It was actually very tough because there were so many eyes and I was on the ground. Several times I would draw on one and another one somewhere that i didn't see would see me and ruin it. In the morning I left the woods about nine to go to breakfast. So before 9 I saw fifteen after daylight there were several before daylight that came through sounded like a herd of horses and thats no exageration we have horses. In the evening between 5:40 and 6:00 I saw ten. I did get on of those, big doe and actually one of those deer I didn't see saved me this time drawing her attention off me. I is just unreal the amount of animals that are out there. One guy said he saw 40 just in the evening. Its amazing y'all. My permit is only six more days and i am confident that i could get one or two every day if I was in a tree. Which I will be when I go back.

Why do they make it taste so good and put it in them little bitty cans- Dad

sounds like a good time bang. Are you allowed to take self climbers into that park? You almost have to be in the air with that many deer around. Good luck, hope you get one everyday. whatchu doing with all the meat?

gagirl- I saw many more doe than bucks however I saw two very very nice bucks and one ok buck. One of the hunters has video of a 170 class buck.

taco- yep got it today. Or I checked it today anyway. I'll call you after my allerton hunting if you don't mind. They only give you seven days on a permit. And I am down to five now.

Susp. yep climbers are allowed. But like a lot of state places your not supposed to cut limbs so it took me a while to find a tree in the area of the park that I am in that I could actually climb. But I have found one and I am telling you, it is on now! [:D][}:)]

They do have a take a doe first rule but now that she is out of the way I can get that buck. Oh and I hope she tastes ok they aged her at 9-12 yrs. You don't here that often. They do limit each hunter to only one buck though. At each check in they give you another tag. Only allowed one buck from the park but can take as many doe as you like. And them b!t@hes are big. I hate to brag on this hunt and possibly knock myself out of the running next year (It's a lottery) but if anyone in the area has the chance to experience this place it is just incredible. Taco man get your buddy over there for next year.
There were some protesters over there today and I was afraid that would ruin it for next year because they have made a big stink about this, been in the local paper several times and on the local news but one of the guys at the check station assured me they haven't discouraged anything. He said we have to do something they (the deer) are destroying this place. They had cops and DNR all over the hunters parking lot, if you weren't hunting you were not allowed there. sorry I write so much just still have the adrinalin flow.
Things should be pickin up soon elsewhere good luck to y'all in the up coming weeks.

    http://www.news.uiuc.edu/ii/04/0805/deer.html

Estimates, based on a count last winter by helicopter, put that population at 163 deer per square mile

    2-Patch
    3-Ball
    4-Remove the Rod
    5-Do Not Forget the Cap.
