Turkey Hunting w/ a Bow

carson0384carson0384 Member Posts: 445 ✭✭✭
Ae their any big Bow Turkey hunters out there? I have never really gotten into the whole turkey scene until this last year when I had about 20 gobblers out in front of my deer stand. Being I don't have the money to go out and get a nice turkey gun, I thought I would give the 'ol bow a try. My fellow hunters keep telling me that there is no way I'm going to get a Turkey with a bow. That they are spooked to easily and I will never get a draw on them. What do you guys think. Do you hunt them from a stand? Ground? What are your best tactics for bow hunting these birds? Any input would help. Thanks again!

Was just talking to a friend about just that. I am planning on having my new bow before season ends here and I fully intend on hunting a turkey with my bow. Looked at some BHs called the turkey guillatine [sp] and they look vicious. I figure if there was enough of a call to make a special broad head then there must be enough people hunting them with a bow. I personaly say go for it... I am going with a shotgun this weekend.

This is what she is talking about. http://www.arrow-dynamic-solutions.com/

I think I asked a question on here once if any one on here bow hunted for turkey. Might want to look that one up. All I know is lots and lots of camo.

I would suggest a ground blind but. They do make a good potable blind for the tree stand . This is my first year really trying hard at hunting the big birds. I come close with my shot gun but not close enough to shoot. I had a minor set back this weekend getting out into the field and it looks like Wednesday before I can get back out. I wish I could be more help, but I'm a big rookie when it comes to turkeys. The tree stand blind in Cabela's is the E-Z UP TREESTAND BLIND item:412714 price is $32.99.It looks pretty good and I plan to get one soon.

My calling is rather disappointing most of the time so I have ended up scouting the areas I hunt gobblers in more and more. I have noticed they have fairly similar routines (pending the weather conditions). I have had more success from tree stands, but hunting from the ground is much more exciting. I setup in natural blinds, such as tree tops blown over or small ravines/gullies. You get caught a lot trying to draw on them, mainly from other birds. It's a great time though.
Our spring season opened today ( I worked [xx(]). Talked to a buddy of mine that went out this morning. He's a much better calling than I am. He called in two coyotes [:D][:D] He said they actually made him half scared because they wouldn't leave, just stayed there growing at him, even after he stood up and waved his arms. Why he didn't shoot them I have no idea...

It is set.... I am going for turkey this saturday. I wont have my new bow tho [:(]. David has decided that I need to call for him this weekend because I am so much better at calling than he is. Like I am not going to shoot... yeah right.

I have a variety, mouth diaphrams, box calls, slate calls, rattle bags, some kinds tube thinga-ma-bob that works fairly good, but sucks to keep concealed while using it. Even got a couple cd's, but those are only for practice (can't take them in the woods, no way). [:D]

[:D] very true. You certainly don't need to be an expert caller to bag one around here. It's getting common for people to hit them with cars anymore. Heck you see flocks of 3 dozen or more on large farms.

I have never been that great at calling turkeys I have found that there is a very fine line between F U and I want to F U.
