45-60 ballistics question

yonsonyonson Member Posts: 944 ✭✭✭
A friend of mine has a 45-60 Chaparral 1876 rifle, is working up loads for steel silhouette from 100 to 400 yds. He is using Red River 325 gr. FPGC (flat point gas check), approx. 1284 fps. Wants to know if a ballistics chart can be found online to help calculate sighting elevations. Anyone?

I found trial and error AS MY ORIGINAL 1876 45-60 HAS OPEN SIGHTS AND I ONLY HUNT IN THICK WOODS WHERE MY SHOTS ARE UNDER 100 YRDS. I USE A 300GR CAST BULLET WITH IMR 4198 FOR ABOUT 1200FPS, SET YOUR TARGETS UP FROM 50YRDS-75YRDS-100YRDS AND SHOOT AT EACH TO SEE HOW MUCH DROP YOU HAVE AT EACH RANGE. YOU CAN SHOOT FARTHER BUT THE DROP WITH BE greater by a bunch. eastbank

Mike, he does have a tall ladder-type tang sight & has been a competitive shooter since the late 40s. He also was a competitive shotgunner & shot exhibitions for Remington back in the 60s. At age 81 still does a lot of benchrest with interesting arms, hence the query. Since he is not computer literate, he asked me to try a search online for ballistic info.

shooting at a steel buffalo at 800 yards with a 74 sharps in 45-70 an and a 525gr postel cast bullet at about 1400fps with a 3.5 inch staff, the bullets are coming down at a steep angle and glance into the ground in front of buffalo. I have dug them up and the just have a big flat spot on one side of the nose. I need to get more speed(1500fps) to make solid hits. in a high wall 45-70 I shoot with a tang sight with clicks, i must dail in 52 clicks to get to 300yards with a 100 yard zero with the same 525gr postel bullet at 1400fps. mr muopic.
