10months since cleaning - BP

CubsloverCubslover Member Posts: 18,601 ✭✭
A friend of mine who shoots with me, fired his CVA Buckhorn off last in December of last year. Hasn't cleaned it since. Any suggestions or is his bore good as gone? I told him it's at least worth cleaning and checking it out.

Edit: Loads his ML with Pyrodex RS.
Half of the lives they tell about me aren't true.

Pyrodex is nearly as hygroscopic as BP.
At the very least, I'd suggest he clean the bore before he takes it out again.

Pyrodex is more corrosive than black powder.
He may be able to save it. He needs to scrub it with a bore brush and some Hoppes#9.
After a couple hundred strokes of that, he needs to get a tight patch on a cleaning jag and polish the bore with JB paste.

Does Hopes #9 work on Pyrodex fouling like it does on smokeless?

Hoppes #9 works great on black powder fouling. I've used it for years. They also make a solvent called "bench rest". I've used that a few times, also very good.
