50 cal conicals for deer hunting

rja72rja72 Member Posts: 141 ✭✭✭
I recently purchased a Cabela's Hawken 50 cal percussion rifle with 1 in 48 twist. I am looking for suggestions on which conical I should use to hunt deer. Being new to muzzle loading i should probably start with something that would be easy to load (if in fact one is easier to load than the other).

How heavy can I go without running into stability problems with the 1 in 48 twist?

Thanks

If you are dead set on conicals, go ahead, they should shoot well in that rifle.
However, your rifle will be accurate with patched round balls. I have used patched round balls in a .50 Hawken to kill 7 deer and 5 wild hogs. One shot kills every time.
They are cheaper and lots of fun to shoot.
