Dry fire practice with a cap & ball pistol

Now I know dry firing will damage the nipples on a black powder C&P pistol but what do people do to dry fire practice with them? I could fit erasers in place of or over the nipples. I could pull the nipples but I think that may still be hard on the hammer. What is the best way to do this or do black powder cowboy action shooters not practice when not at the range? Thanks.
