TC Pro Hunter help

Liv2FishLiv2Fish Member Posts: 655 ✭✭✭✭
Brand new TC Pro Hunter Thumbhole camo stock the hole 9 yards.
Brand new Omega Muzzleloader Scope
100 Grain Triple 7
295 Powerbuilt Bullet tried several diffrent bullets weights and still got same result.

This is my first Muzzle loading experience and I am looking for any help I can get. I have several friends that shoot this gun and love it but They are all out of town and I am running out of town before deer season. I have several rifles and just really want to shhot the Muzzle loader this year.

Gun was set up and bore sighted (Laser) told it would be on the paper at 100 Yards WRONG didn't really believe it but tried it anyway. Missed target shot low. Change to 50 yards and move adjustment shot low still ended up adjust scope as much as possible and still hit 6" low at 50 yards. I am at the max of my adjustments Took gun to shop and was told that my mounts were bad got new mounts and bore sighted again I went to the range and got the same results. I shot the gun holding purposely 2 circles down and got within an inch.

Anyone got any suggestions Thanks!!!

Try another scope, if you don't have one, try with the open sites. Sounds like you have a bad scope.

I believe you are correct!!!! I shot it again today and then had someone else shoot it we both shot the same place low and to the right.

    Thanks

If I remember correctly, the Omega scope is set up to shoot the TC 250grn. sabot with 150 grn. of powder. I would try that before I gave up on the scope.

Take the breech plug out of the rifle and prop it up and look thru the barrel at the target and center it in the bore, now look thru the scope and make adjustments to center the crosshairs on the target, this should get you on the paper.

What kind of mounts are you using? I would want TC mounts for this set up.My 2nd choice would be Leuapold (probably not spelled right).

Try Coltsmoke's method and give this a shot too, check the level of the scope rings, If you have them on a rail system it is easy to install out of "plumb" I have seen allot of guys spend money on new scopes and rings only to find that the rails or rings were not level with the bore.

you don't state what brand of mounts you had installed on this rifle but i agree with coltsmoke, have a set of Leupold mounts installed on it and rebore sight it.you can use the base mount for windage adjustment and if the up and down runs out of adjustment you can install shim material under the base to get elevation you need, just my .02

Thanks for all of the suggestions!! I have now tried several diffrent brands of scope rings and a diffrent scope. The store that the gun came from has been very helpful however they are 75 miles away. I just had the gun worked on yesterday and again they bore sighted and when I went to shoot it well must I tell you the same thing. Shooting low and to the side. I adjusted the scope after cleaning and shot again Not much change. I am again out of adjustments. I went to another local gun shop to have them look at it and they completly remounted the scope again bore sighted it to shoot 1" high took the gun to shoot and it shot low again. I finally got one close to the center I used the 200 yard sight that is how low it has been shooting. I think that I have a bad gun Barrel and my patience is getting thin season is this Saturday It really does not look good. I think the shim suggestion is going to have to work but in the end I think TC needs to help me out. I talked to them this morning and they told me to send it in but there is a 3-4 wait. Bummer

I have now tried about ever load possible with hopes that there will be a difference. I have fiqure that I have spent close to $200 trying to get this to shoot not counting the time.

Almost traded it today but the gun shop won't deal. Wonder Why!!

    Thanks again!!!

    Liv2Fish,

Are you using pellets or loose powder. If using loose, drop down to 90 grains of powder.

The other thing that you can do is change to the 250 grain Shockwave bullets that Coltsmoke suggested. Or, try loading with the Hornady 240 grain .44 Cal XTPs in the Hornady Green sabots.

Also, are you using low rings or medium or high? Always use the shortest rings that will allow the scope to be mounted.

Is your hinge pin loose or tight? If it is loose, try to get another, or order an 1X oversized pin from Mike Bellem or get one of the screw together type from Cabelas or E.Arthur Brown.

I have a hard time believing that you got a bad barrel. My thought is that it is a bad bullet/powder combo.

The last thing that I will ask is are you sure that you are not "pulling" the shot. This is quite common when dealing with thumbhole stocks. They allow you to "grip" better and if you squeeze too hard in anticipation of the recoil, the design of the thumbhole stock will cause you to pull up on the stock, therefore lowering the front of the barrel and shooting low.

    Liv2fish,
I am glad I found this piece because I think I am in the same boat. I have a brand new TC Pro Hunter camo stock (No Thumbhole) top of the line.
Brand new Omega Muzzleloader Scope after switching from a Leupold Vari-X II which I thought was the problem.
I've tried the recomended 150 Grain (3 pellets) and the 100 Grain (2 pellets) Triple 7
I shoot the TC 250grn Shock Wave bullet. I've tried several diffrent bullets weights and still cannot hit any consistant groups. Infact, at times I am off the paper at 100 yards. I too have spent at least $200 dollars trying to get this thing to shoot straight. It will not.
What did Bass Pro Shop say was wrong with the gun they took back? It sounds like I have the same problem.
Here is the kicker, I have a 10 year old $250 Knight T-bolt muzzleloader that will out shoot this high dollar Pro Hunter hands down.
Is your new gun still shooting well?

Bass Pro took the Gun back as a good faith deal. I know that you can send it back to Thompson but you will wait for 3 to 4 weeks. I am very unhappy about the situtation and tried to voice my opionion and it seemly fell on deaf ears at Thompson. I have not fully sighted in and will work on that after deer season. I rushed to get the gun hitting close but the funny thing is I put a tight group to the right then made a small adjustment and went 4 inches to the left then made another adjustment and it went dead center. This was good enought for me as time was to leave for the trip. I was shooting a 270 grain Powerbuilt bullet and 150 grain of 777 I tried all diffrent bullets and powdered grains and I was fed up. I know that they say use the TC sabot but I actually was out of bullets and went to a back up. Still not a real happy camper. As far as what was wrong BPS really has no idea what was wrong other than what I told them. I think it had a bad barrel or scope mounting holes mis drilled. They are just a sales counter and during this time of the year you are happy to get waited on. Their custromer service is top much better than the factory. Virginia Hunter please send me a PM with your Tel number I would love to talk to about this more.

    liv2fish,
Wednesday night this week my gun shop replaced my Pro Hunter as well. But not until I wrote a red hot smokin' email/fax to T/C Arms, Smith-Wesson(owns T/C), and my gun shop. In fact after making big noise, they threw in a .243 barrel to compensate me for the $500 plus I wasted in dealing with my wild shooting Pro Hunter. Wednesady night at the gun shop, after they gave me the new rifle and .243 barrel, the District Sales Manager from Smith and Wesson who happened to be at my gun shop was arrogant enough to try to convince me I was consistantly shooting 12 inches off the paper because of shooter error! Said I was pulling the shot! So the next day I sighted in my new Pro Hunter (in 5 shots), killed a deer with it that afternoon, and wrote another red hot smokin' email/fax letting Smith and Wesson know thier Sales Manager did not exactly help create a customer service success story here. You don't buy a $1200 rig only to find out it shoots like a wet noodle, spend $500 trying to get it right, and then have some Sales Manager tell you it's your fault. He's dealing with a customer complaint by getting confrontational and embarrassing the customer. What was this guy thinking?
I will say Thompson Center and my gun shop worked hard to help, but the actions of Smith and Wesson over shadowed any goodwill they may have created.
Call me during work hours at 804 282-7641 ask for Jim and we can discuss further. I cannot believe we are alone here. The rifles we had were indentically inconsistant.

As an owner of over 70 T/C guns, and over 150 in the past 30 years, I find that hard to believe. There service and support has always been top notch. Not that I don't believe your situation, anything can happen. Try one of these numbers, Direct customer service (603)-330-5659 or 603-332-2333 You should get some attention that way. Like I said I was always impressed with there service, so much so that I bought stock in the company. Keep us posted.

Thanks Underdog as I said I sent an E-mail on the 16th of Nov. As of today I have never got a reply. I did call one of the numbers that you listed this morning. I got a real friendly girl and I asked to speak to her supervisor. I ended up with Raymond or Ramone and he was not in. I left a message and now time will tell.

Good to hear, Please keep us posted. I have been a T/C shooter and collector since I was a boy and always had good luck with them, but I have been a bit cautious since S&W took over.

Time is telling it seems like they really don't care. I have now sent an E-mail and left a message with the supervisor and still not recieved a call back. Great Customer Thompson Center NOT! I feel anyone that has taken the time to make a call should receive the common courtesy of a return call. So far they have no common courtesy.

I called T/C back today I felt that I waited long enough. I did talk to a real nice girl and she seemed to care. I explained all of the issues to her and asked her to move me up the chain of command. I know that it sounds like I am a real complainer here but I am a believer in great custromer service. I guess I am more upset with their lack of responce than anything. Now I guess time will tell.

After last week I never got another call but I did get a real nice Thompson Pro Hunter Sling delivered to me Saturday. Now that is a company that believes in taking care of their customers. WELL I guess in their minds they do.

Try going to prbullet.com ... I'm sure you'll learn alot there. My Encore works great with 100gr 777 and 250gr Shockwaves. I've never had luck with Powerbelts being consistent. Remember to be consistent with your actions between shots, It should be the same procedure shot to shot, I get 1 to 2 inch groups at 100 yards with a rested Encore .50 , 26 inch barrel. Don't use bore butter... Read the info at prbullet.com ... Email me if you have any questions. ral819@aol.com

Thanks for the info. I did start getting a good group after I got a new gun. It is amazing when you go out and shoot probably 100 times during the process and finally finding out the gun was the issue. When you make the investment in a quality gun you expect quality service to come with it. I have found this is not the case with Thompson that is for sure. I was in the customer service business for several years and never would I avoid a custromer complaint as they have. I have sent E-mails that have yet to be answered. I have left 2 messages to the person in charge of customer complaints and never recieved a call back. I have talked to a young lady in customer service who tried to do the correct thing. She sent me a nice prohunter sling for my trouble. I now have a 4 to 5 hundred dollar sling -I think. I did ask her to follow up and I wanted to speak to someone up the ladder yet I still have not gotten a call and it has been two weeks. I guess my feelings in a nutshell are I think T/C makes a real good looking gun and it seems they spend tons marketing their product. All of the shows feature them. I only hope that you get a good one because if not you are the one that will be holding the bag. I am thinking about buying a muzzleloader for my son for Christmas. I wonder what brand it will be.

I have found Muzzleloaders can be quite finicky with what works from one to another. I had a similar problem in sigting in with a Bushnell scope, it wound up being a bad elevator... Shooting and experimenting with different products is key. Reading other shooters experiences helps as well. I've found That what I did between shots matters as much as the components I used. It's definitely been an education and I've invested my share of $$$...Good Luck !

It is now Jan 6th and I never heard again from Thompson.
Would I buy or recomend a T/C to anyone
Do I really need to answer that.

I hope that someone that works at Thompson reads this and maybe it will make a diffrence for someone else. I know it sounds like I was asking for the world. No Not Really.
I would like to ask T/C this question. If you purchased from a supplier a part or product that had something wrong with it and it cost your company time and money to correct the issue what would you do?
