I am considering the Thompson/Center Omega rifle and am curious if its worth paying the extra $75 for the weather shield option, or is that just another gimic?

The BP corrosion problems are not on the outside of things! I'd say save the $75.

An old trick is before the season starts coat the outside of your gun with Johnsons paste floor wax.

I like the paste wax suggestion. I'll be trying that one. As for ANY, special coatings, if corrosion is a problem, go stainless. My 870 Rem., has their flat black, paint type coating. Paint doesn't take oil very well, it rust faster than a blued finish.
