paper patched bullets for 45-70

Can some of you experienced Sharps shooters give me the pros and cons of paper patched bullets? Are they as great as I've heard other shooters say? The molds are quite expensive but if the accuracy is there and clean up is eaiser then I just might spring for one. Also how about use with smokeless powder? any advice or comments will be appreciated. thanks Dave

I get minute of angle accuracy with several smokeless powders and bullet combinations. I use loads as light as 1000fps up to heavy Marlin 1895 405gr loads. All work really great. My favorites are with H4198 and the Remington 405gr at trapdoor levels. A really nice shooting target and hunting load for deer and bear. I have used black and lead bullets, they are ok but black is so hard to find these days, or very expensive to get.

I shoot an olser model IAB Sharps Number 3 Business rifle in 45-70. I have shot nothing out of it but paper patched lead bullets.
I use an "Exacto" Knife and a copper template to make the patches out of a heavier grade of paper. I forget which grade of bond , but it has a high cloth content.

I wet the patch w/ tap water and roll it on, setting them aside to dry.
When dry I clip off the tails and apply liquid alox with a modelers paint brush.
I have had very good results and some very NICE velocities using them with no leading of the rifle's bore.
I use them because they are traditional with the Sharps and they work!
send me an email if you need more info or a copy of the template.
    Chuck

Do you size your bullets after patching?
