Question about .45 LC

I am looking at getting a single action .45 LC. It is a new manufacture replica gun. My reloading manual has listings for both .45 LC and .45 LC +P with the recommendation that +P's only be used in new guns. The manufacturer says nothing about +p loads and when I contacted them they told me they could not make a recommendation either way that it was up to me. Do you think +p loads would be safe in an all steel replica gun?

Yes and no.

Assuming your replica is of the Colt SAA variety, I'd say yes, but on a very limited basis, and only +P ammo from the major manufacturers, as opposed to the heavy bullet loads from Buffalo Bore & such.

Unless you're going hunting, you really don't need the extra bit of oomph from the +P. Remember, the Casull .454 revolver (later Freedom Arms) came about because the inventor got tired of blowing up Colt SAAs with his hot loads.

There are regular pressure .45 Colt rounds that will do a good job for defensive use and even hunting. However, if you're planning on going handgun hunting as the guns principal use, I'd get something stouter.

It is more of a toy than anything.... most of my hunting is done with centerfire rifles, when I do use a handgun its a 357 mag at under 50 yards. I was just looking to get a little bit more out of the .45. Maybe I will look at a .44 mag, then I can load it down for fun and load it up for more important things.

If it's one of the Italian replicas like a lot of us use in CAS, I'd stay far away from those hot loads. It isn't going to feel that great on your hands, and after a while, it won't do that gun any good either! [;)]

Save the high-horsepower loads for a Ruger Blackhawk, they have a much sturdier frame and topstrap.

After some more research I'm thinking that I will have to go with a Blackhawk .45 LC. Unfortunately around me used ones are rare as a hens tooth, and even when found often exceed the price of new. I really hate to buy a new ruger and support an anti-gun company but it looks as if I have little choice. I'm gonna look hard for a used one but I doubt I will find one.

Have you checked out the ruger forum?
Tons of info there from very long time Ruger shooters,and alwasy guns for sale...both new model and old.

They can be loaded very warm and keep on ticking.

If you want a Colt SAA reproduction that you can shoot heavier loads with, look at the American-made U. S. Firearms Rodeo. The factory just dropped the factory suggested retail price on these guns $110, from $660 to $550. USFA makes more expensive SAAs, but the big difference is the finish and markings, not the quality. The Rodeo is finished in a dull blue/black and has not been highly polished like the more expensiver verisions.

I saw a US Firearms Rodeo today at the gun shop. They wanted 770 for the plain jane base model with black grips. They would not budge on the price either.

I am looking at a USFA ad that states they dropped the price on the USFA Rodeo. It could also be that the distributer for USFA has a $#!+pot full of Rodeos that he bought at a higher price and cannot discount them down to the level of the new price.

Go to a different shop and ask them to contact the factory and to ask about the ad that says the price was lowered on these guns. If he cannot order the gun at a price reflective of the new retail price, get hold of USFA and have a talk with them.

"Suggested retail price", in my opinion, is on the high side of what you should have to pay to buy the gun. There's a shop or two out here where I live that will always discount guns down from suggested retail.

I would not fire a +P load in in replica of a Colt SAA. When they talk about new manufacture guns they are referring to ones that are also chanbered in .44 mag like Ruger Single Action or Double Action Ruger and S&W.

Business question: if a distributor has an overabundance of stock (Rodeos) bought at a higher price than the current wholesale, what's he to do? If I were a distributor, I would have to let my Rodeo's go at the lower price. What benefit is there in holding onto them? Joe

I ended up going with an Uberti Cattleman in .357.... I really wanted .45 LC but all anyone had around here had was the .357. I ended up getting a price so good on one I could not say no.... I already have a reloader set up for .357 so why not have one more. I am still in the market for either a .44 mag or a used ruger .45 LC....

Don't give up! Keep your eyes open for a used Ruger Blackhawk in 45 LC. I have one with the 4 5/8 inch barrel. Just love the gun. It handles the +P without any problems.

I never give up, just keep on looking at all the local gunshops for a good deal. Something will come around eventually. Thought about a gun show but the prices at the last few I went to were so insane it was not even worth the money it cost to get in, because I came out totally empty handed.

My 45 LC Ruger Vaqueros in Stainless Steel will handle a hot load but SASS legal Cowboy loads are so much more fun to shoot if your just plinkin.

Years ago, I fired a lot of Keith's heavy 18.5 gr H2400 loads out of a 2nd Gen SAA Colt and found the cylinder pin bushing gets hammered, shortening it and causing cylinder end play. Fitting a new bushing corrected the problem.
Also,all the screws will loosen up.
A Ruger is probably a better idea for heavy loads.
