Talk about bad luck. I'm confident it was on approach plates and someone probably mentioned it to the pilot at some point.

Since the tower didn't just in his way, I'm gonna go with pilot error.

    Should of been on the sectional for that area also. Towers that tall don't just spring up over night. If he was VFR but using flight watch the controls are pretty good about telling about obstructions.

    here dead air put two in the ground but lived...and one came over a ridge and tried to fly under a cross country power line...crashed and burned...DRT...dangerous work if done right

    Same thing happened to SG-10 in PagoPago. Tram wire or radio tower guy wire, both are bad juju to big airplanes or little airplanes.
