If stopped, when should you tell the officer that you have a gun in the car?

But seriously it really depends on which state. Here in California it better be unloaded and locked away. Like a trunk or a gun case with a lock. Ammo in different part of your ride. Example; gun in the trunk, ammo in the back seat or gun locked in a case in the trunk then ammo can be in the trunk as well (unless this changed).
As for me, it don't matter the state or local law or ordinance. So I don't keep up with that stuff.

I want them to feel comfortable, I follow his directions.
the main reason I let him know, I dont want any problems.
one did ask me if it was loaded, I said hell yes, if I need
it, I dont want to any to worry about that, pull the hammer back
and I am ready to go.
I had secret service come to my house, after some of my letters
to Obama, we were sitting at the kitchen table, he had a form
letter, he ask if I owned any weapons, I told him I was as close
to mine as he was to his. he got jumpy after that, I dont know
why[}:)]
I actually did that once, it was good growing up in a small town.

Most people just own guns. Same as any other item, they only become a weapon when either used against someone or if that's it's sole purpose.
Not everyone views each gun they own as their 'weapon'.

Assuming all these to be true, the cop should know that you're a CCW holder before he ever approaches your vehicle. But given that it's unpredictable as to whether the particular cop has a) access to the info and/or b) bothered to look you up...
I think the appropriate time to tell them, is at the point where they ask you to step out of the vehicle, though there does not appear to be any RCW code relating to when to tell them.

In my state you are only required to tell IF the officer asks.
IF I am getting pulled over for a traffic violation I only state I have a gun on 2 occasions. The traffic stop has NOTHING to do with firearms and I am not going to be the one to bring a gun into something that does not involve a gun. Others may feel differently but the stop has nothing to do with guns. Do you tell the person bagging your groceries you have a gun? NO, cause it has nothing to do with guns. Telling an LEO does not make them any safer or unsafe since you as a law abiding person were not going to shoot them anyhow.
When I will tell is if the officer asks (for me hardly ever happens), the second is if I have to get into an area where my gun is (happens about half the time).
I have a lead foot problem so have done this a lot over the years.
After they find it [:D].

now if you don't have a permit, that's a whole nother animal....
In Michigan they know as soon as they run your plate. But be nice, tell them anyways, and keep your hands high on the steering wheel.
and trun on you dome (fish bowl light) if its dark so they can see in

Good one. Forgot that. We do teach that too. Other than responding to domestic disputes I've heard that single-cop road stops are the most dangerous. Put yourself in his/her place and think about walking up on a dark car all by yourself at night. Turn on the dome light and put both hands on the wheel until he asks you for your DL, etc. No need raise his apprehension level any higher than it already is. Your courtesy just may pay off with a warning and no ticket.

They may know you have a permit but dont know if you are carrying it in the car[;)]
I was, for a time, a jack booted thug and have made thousands of traffic stops..at night and the only cop on duty. A few times drivers, usually out-of-staters, would announce that they had a gun in the car. My usual response was "so what". If someone means to use a firearm on me... they are not going to announce it ahead of time. It's silly for cops to ask "do you have a weapon?". They are either law-abiding citizens in which case it's a) no threat or b) none of my business!! (it's called the 4th amendment) OR they are bad guys and you will find out soon enough!! I simply watched body language and conducted myself accordingly... no worries.

If I were an officer, my answer would be, "of course you have a handgun in there. I assume everybody does."
If you were an officer would you assume that someone who doesn't tell you they're carrying is not carrying? Would you believe someone who tells you they are not carrying?
I wouldn't.
I usually yell at them as soon as they get out of their car "I GOT A GUN".

But as long as I'm here...One has to imaging that even if you are obeying all of the laws of the road and are just driving down the street in a line of boring traffic--if there is a policeman behind you he has run your plate and already knows. Cops will run plates in driveways and mall parking lots. A Lot of persons will have something illegal about themself or their vehicle or have a minor warrant for a parking ticket. NOTHING TO DO WITH A GUN.
However, if you stand out in some way, like nasty bumper stickers, cracked tail-light lense, wriggling around and seeming to be hiding stuff, you could be stopped. Be nice. Tell them what they already know.
makes no difference to me if a Permit holder tells me or not...I'm gonna know when I run their Drivers License( for an in state atleast). Still doesn't typically matter to me. It is a nice courtesy when they do tell me.

yeah I was going to say most states tie it to your DL. So your best off saying something vs them seeking out the information. As much as some of you hate gun laws and what not police officers are just doing their job and enforcing laws handed down to them

We in Vermont pity you who have allowed your rights to be taken away. We have only one gun law in Vermont.. A person cannot carry a firearm with criminal intent.

Then there's the opposite situation:
I don't have anything illegal in here! Nope, no sir! No guns, no weapons of any kind, and there's really nobody, er, nothing in the trunk that you need to see either. Nope!
Florida is a "Dont ask, dont tell" state.
Yet in 2 (out of town) DL checks, and a local Sams assistant mgr reporting me as an intoxicated, homeless indigent, I have been asked "have you got any guns or knifes on you?" by officers in 3 different countys. I take the easy way, when they ask I tell.
The local thing was/is actually kind of fun.
(all I can say is imho, the mgr hoped the response would be by JBTs, and got 2 very professional deputys instead. [^])

If he asks to search my car at that time I will tell him that I have a CC permit and I have weapons in the car. Then it is up to him how he wants to procede.
Tell him NO first! Then about the permit and weapons.

I agree, if asked if they can search i say "not unless you have a signed search warrant"
