I bought some at Wallyworld last week.....
Cause most folks don't buy .22 long.
Several companies continue to load .22 long, but it is a specialty round and with ammo in huge demand there isn't much incentive to manufacture .22 Long when every box of .22 Long Rifle flies off the shelf- if it even manages to make it onto the shelf. Whether or not any wholesaler currently has .22 Long in stock is anyone's guess.
22LONG? William, at wallyworld?, who would have thought. I haven't seen any in a store for decades.
Off hand the 552 Speedmaster still takes it.
The last box that I bought was at a Walmart in Washington Mo. about 6 months ago bought them for my Mom for ground hog control at her place
I have not looked in a while. When I checked my stock to see if I needed any I am embarased to say I found I had over 22K. I have since shot maybe 500.🙄
For what purpose? A weapon designed for the .22 Long will fire .22 shorts & high velocity .22 shorts should just about match .22 longs & have the same bullet. The only advantage long ago was lower price than .22 LR & that is long gone for both shorts & longs.
Holy Moley............22K? I think I only have 6 or 7 K of LR and I thought I was well stocked.😦
I haven't shot a .22 Long since I was in High School
I’m sure there’s a historical reason for .22 Long. There are guns that shoot .22 long rifle only and there are Gus that shoo .22 short only. I’ve never heard of a gun that shoots.22 long only.
OK :
I think I may have some '.22 longs' , Im thinking I had a '.22 long' cal. firearm at one time ??? ( maybe a pos elcheapo 22 rev.) ?
Thanks !!!
I Grew Old Too Fast (And Smart Too damn Slow !!!) !!! :?
For those not aware, the .22Long uses the same case as the LR with the same bullet as the Short. I believe it pretty much matches the ballistics of the Short. It was a "bastid" round to begin with and never saw much demand.
Someone with a Cartridges of the World may be able to quote some other facts.
It sounds like the longs would be the bee's knees in a suppressed carbine.
When I was a boy long ago,a box of 22 short was.55cents,a box of 22 long was .65cents and a box of long rifle was .75cents at the local hardware store.
And I didn't need any ID or anything, just pay the clerk and walk,
22 Long was the standard, after the 22Short. Your other two choices were the short lived 22Extra Long, and the 22WRF. The .22 Long Rifle was originally a 22Long case, loaded with a 45grn bullet, some say introduced in 1884. Wasn't a regular chambering until about 1904-6. The Winchester 1890 was chambered in .22 Short only, or 22 Long only, until the Model 1906 came out that would feed all three. I have a Rem #4, and Stevens single shot both chambered in 22Long.
The only 22Longs to be found now are CB caps. I use High Speed Shorts in these guns, and they are far more efficient.
That's a better account, TRAP, thanks. I was writing from my 1950s perspective, by which time the LR had long become the standard. No wonder the Long had faded from popularity by then. LRs and Shorts were by far the most common, but one could still buy Longs as well as both BB and CB caps. Revolvers and single-shot rifles could fire them all which was pretty handy at times.
Fairs and carnivals still had shooting galleries back then - using live ammunition! I remember not only shooting at one but winning a prize. They featured Winchester pump rifles and the ammo was BB caps IIRC. The BB cap used a Short case but only a priming charge - no powder - and a round lead ball. The CB used a conical bullet and a heavier priming charge but still no powder. Anyway, I can clearly recall the "Pap!" noise those shooting gallery rifles made and the "Ding!" when you hit the steel ducks or targets.
CCI still lists a high velocity 29 grain 22 long - https://www.cci-ammunition.com/rimfire/cci/22_long/6-29.html
Pretty much the same performance as their high velocity 22 short. I guess if you didn't want to dirty your LR chamber with shorts and wanted the lighter bullet for some reason they would fill the bill. Probably not a big seller and with the production emphasis probably on LR right now I am not sure where you can find them. Bob
I saw about 10 boxes of longs at my local gun store a couple of weeks ago. I thought about buying a couple of boxes but couldn't think of a reason I needed them. I guess using that reasoning I wouldn't have most of the guns and ammo I currently have!!
I have quite a few BB caps that use a much shorter case than the .22 short. I would hate to shoot them now since I have seen them for sale at outrageous prices.
Rocky, that was just the Readers Digest condensed version! A lot of history of the .22 rimfires, and a lot more that contradicts that too.
