Pray tell where can you find 20 & 28 gauge bird shot shotgun shells for $6.25 a box? I need to go to the bank - pull out some savings and load up the trunk of the car with boxes of various shot sizes.

i went to the Tampa gun show at the state fairgrounds last weekend and there was all kinds of ammo in any flavor you wanted being sold. Some was a little higher in price than normal but a lot was very good priced by the case. The big box retailers around me are all out but there was a bunch of ammo at the show. Lots of AR type guns being sold too and there was no shortage of them.

  • mogley98mogley98 Member Posts: 18,291 ✭✭✭✭

Around here in retail I've seen 380 and 38 etc going for 84 cents a round, other places 1.00!

Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Picked up my Walther in Columbia yesterday. No ammo except a lonely box of Sig 10mm on the end aisle. It came home with me along with the Walther.

Ammo prices have gone crazy............I sold all of my guns because I just ran out of ammo and could not afford to feed the firearms anymore.

  • select-fireselect-fire Member Posts: 69,539 ✭✭✭✭

Ammo prices will vary with sellers and time of day to buy it. Early morning has been working for me off of GB. Most High Power rifle 25/06 was around 25 box with tax at local store. 300 Win Mag would run 30 bucks a box with tax. Real premium ammo was more. Been picking up both calibers for around 25-30 box with shipping. Have 4 buys being shipped now. Now the prices have been going with bids for 2 bucks a round or more and that does not include shipping. Shop wisely.

  • buddybbuddyb Member Posts: 5,395 ✭✭✭✭

I quoted a guy $1. a round for 300 blackout. When I met him to make the sale he insisted to pay $1.50 a round.Strange times.

  • Butchdog2Butchdog2 Member Posts: 3,834 ✭✭✭✭

Some of the not so often used calibers can be bought reasonable. Bought a case of 280 loaded with Barnes triple shock for 1.50 a round delivered. Bullet will cost close to 1 buck each to roll your own. That is if you can even find them..

Shoot a 10 gauge some, that ammo is not too through the roof yet.

Prices are so high now that even the spammers on CL have raised their prices.😀

  • select-fireselect-fire Member Posts: 69,539 ✭✭✭✭

More ammo coming this week 9 different orders...all regular old priced before the gouge . most scores on Gunbroker.

  • JimmyJackJimmyJack Member Posts: 5,519 ✭✭✭✭

You are lucky, I shoot a lot and thats coming to an end. The only thing I have that I could trade is .22 LR and Im in need of .22 Mag and birdshot. There is some on GB but too high for my wallet.

I'm sitting pretty on all types of ammo and reloading material needs, got all I'll ever need and enough for immediate family members too. I saw this shortage coming a long while back and stocked up a little along the way at very good prices. I'm really surprised at how many had their heads buried in the sand not seeing it coming again after the last supply shortage a few years back.......I learned my lesson well back then, not to become complacent, you never know.

That's insane for PMC considering theyve outside sourced ammo from the Phillipines, MX, and a few other relatively cheap producing countries.(and when I say cheap, I mean cheap especially their Phillipines bought ammo)They also produce ammo, but quite a bit is 3rd party as well.

  • select-fireselect-fire Member Posts: 69,539 ✭✭✭✭

If the online sales cease ammo will get real expensive real quick. Black market. Sitting on ammo that doesn't have a firearm, it won't get cheaper.

Now my wife understands why I bought two more safes and put them in our climate controlled garage. One is full of powder and the other is full of primers. If she only knew the value of what’s in them she would go on a shopping spree.

  • Ditch-RunnerDitch-Runner Member Posts: 25,399 ✭✭✭✭

I have bought about 1k more rounds 300 black out and 308 mostly and a stray box or two of 9mm and 45 JHP , by watching one of the " Best price internet page" early morning is best to get at least close to the normal prices I have had items in my cart and go back to see what else they may have I can use to save on a one stop shopping cost and they sell out before I check out and nothing to buy in my cart so got to be fast

1k not a lot but it adds up over time ,

I have not reloaded for some time and have not even tried to find primers and powder seems to be a lost cause right now

    gjshaw,

Federal regulations for powder/primer storage in the home is a wood box with 1" thick walls. Here are some suggestions from another source:

    • It is called a "weak wall" enclosure. A wall of the enclosure is built of lighter weight materiel that will vent if pressures go up. The fed specs are for a 1" wall wooden box...slows down fires and allows pressures out. I'd do a half inch plywood box with 3/4 inch drywall liners inside. Keep primers and powders in separate boxes. JMHO
    • I have been planning to make a box out of 2x4s and fire rated dry wall. This way I can have an (inch - two layers) of drywall enclosing my powder and primers.
    • this was recommended to me by a fire inspector that i know who relods. the drywall will protect everything from small fires and allowd you to lock them to keep them out of innocent hands. If a fire does get inside of the box the drywall will give and lower hte chance of an explosion. The best part is you can make them just about any size, and you can put a safe dryer in it and put it under the bench.
    • Why would you think that would be a good idea to store anything that can ignite/explode in an enclosed/sealed environment that can reach those kind of temps?!?
    • I don't keep any powder, primers, loaded ammo, gasoline, kerosene, or anything else likely to explode or catch fire inside my gun safe. Your average housefire can reach temps in excess of 1500 degrees F. Even my safe, which has a 1680 degree F fire protection rating for 90min, will allow the interior temp of the safe to reach around 350 degrees or so!! Cheaper safes will get even hotter inside in much less time. You are asking for a BIG BANG if you store powder, primers, ammo, etc. inside your safe and to otherwise destroy anything and everything you have stored in the safe.

So keeping ammo in a metal military ammo can is not good.

  • nononsensenononsense Member Posts: 10,928 ✭✭✭✭

We're not discussing ammunition, we're talking about bulk smokeless powder and primers stored in a gun safe. There are those folks who don't think storing bulk ammunition in a gun safe is a good idea but they seem to accept storage in a metal ammo cans... Go figure.

“I'm sitting pretty on all types of ammo and reloading material needs,...”

    Same here.

I do need to make my reloading room more secure.

  • gjshawgjshaw Member Posts: 14,770 ✭✭✭✭

Thank you for your concern but I didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday, I have been reloading my own since the 60’s and I know how to store powder and primers properly.

"I know how to store powder and primers properly."

Obviously by your previous statements about storing them in a safe, you do not. That's why I took the time to look up the regulations.

Other than that, best of luck to you and yours!

    Have a nice Day!😀

By Golly there is some stuff out there! Got a lead, gonna probably pay two prices, but thats the sign of the times.

  • WulfmannWulfmann Member Posts: 4,906 ✭✭✭

I store powders and primers in a proper 1" wood cabinet as prescribed by regulations

You may keep up to 20 pounds of powder out for use but over 20 (up to 50 max) must be in a wood case/box/cabinet whatever if you intend on complying with the law.

Now if you ignore the regulations it is unlikely you will be raided but if there is a fire and you have not stored powder correctly will your insurance contest your claim??? I do not know, do you?

The biggest issue is powder stored in a small confined space is that it can become a bomb if it gets ignition from some source.

Powder burns but if it can't freely it it kaboom time. Tighter and stronger the storage area the bigger the blast.

    Pipe bomb effect.

Dynamite magazines have a relief system designed in them if such a incident occurs. You have the boom but more under control.

    My 2 cents.

In our neck of the woods the fire marshal is supposed to have a record of your stash and give you a (permit).

Supposed to be to alert the Fire Dept of your hazard in case of a fire. Just more big brother doings.

  • pulsarncpulsarnc Member Posts: 6,568 ✭✭✭✭

My powder and primers are stored in igloo type coolers . Airtight and temperature stable . Self venting in case of fire .Ideal storage from my experience is an old refrigerator or freezer . 37 years a a fireman and I have seen contents of toatally burned out houses survive inside the fridge . In case it catches on fire the seal can/ will burn and release any possible kaboom . Just don't have room at present for one but plan to in the future

We have a local 'previously owned' appliance dealer here in town. They get all kinds of used, non-working refrigerators and freezers. They will practically give them away if you do the hauling. The simple way is to remove all the useless motor/compressor stuff so the weight is reduced significantly. Do not use a any locks, just the magnetic seals which came on them. Perfect storage according to our fire department.

If my house catches on fire I am just going to run and let it burn. It would take the fire department way to long to get her to save anything.

Interesting enough I started a thread on price gouging where Guns and Gagets had reported the Texas AG's action against CTD and the forum admins killed it.

Wouldnt you know after spending next weeks allowance on birdshot I find about seven boxes hiding in the back of a drawer.

Score! That’s more than a C-note at today’s crazy prices.

  • Butchdog2Butchdog2 Member Posts: 3,834 ✭✭✭✭

Been cleaning and organizing the ready room. Found several thousand slightly used primers.

Might put them on the auction side, Ought to be worth 30.00 per thousand, that is 1/3 what they are selling for new.

I bought AR-15 rifles last year when the prices were in the dumps. I have bought ammo when prices were down for a long time. I gave my next door neighbor a 240 round sealed spam can of good Greek 30/06 for his son's Garand this morning. I bought a bunch of that maybe 20 years ago when it was cheap. I did buy a few boxes of 9 mm 124+P Gold Dots a couple months ago and paid, I think $35.00 per 50 round box cause I have never used 9mm as a defense round but I might want to use my PPQ. Now is a bad time to buy ammo but if you must then yup, you will probably have to pay a premium. I have maybe 6 more battle packs of .308 and no .308 rifle. I have been offered $1.50 per round locally. Now is probably a good time to sell excess ammo and guns. At last count I had 37 ammo cans at home. I can see four in the corner from my desk and there are a few more in the outer office filled with .45 acp and 9mm ball. I am a fat old man, how many bullets and guns do I need??

Refrigerant gas must be removed from junked refrigerators and freezers by a qualified technician. Small children have died because the crawled into and old refrigerator/freezer and couldn’t get out.

I was Chief of a small town volunteer fire department. We would pick up unused refers from citizens and haul them off for safety reasons. When the refrigerant recovery regulations went in, we had to stop doing so.

Not one made in the last 50 years. They took the locking handles off a long time ago. You can't get locked in the trunk of your car anymore either unless you are really drunk.

On another note, it’s a dang shame you can’t just go to the store and buy whatever powder and primers you need as you need them.

I took about 70LBs of ammo to Kasey's for her to sell about two weeks ago :)
