ford 7.3 gas engine?
anybody have one? i thinking my next pickup will be one as much as i hate to say it i just cant justify the extra cost of the diesel pickups anymore my current pickup is a 6.7 powerstoke its been a good pickup but pushing 360,000 miles its had its problems had to replace exhaust manifolds that was 2000G replace turbo luckly my son in law works on pickups after his day job of being a mechanic at an ag dealership that was 2400 itd been more than double that at ford dealership transmission will about knock your teeth out when it shifts from 1st to 2nd that most likely be around 6000.00 plus couple times of def tank heaters going out and sensors in exhaust last time it happened i had all that stuff deleted anyways the gas pickup is 10k cheaper right off the bat you can actually see the engine and wouldnt have to pull cab off for any major work like the diesel now.....epa completely wrecked the diesel engine imho anyways just looking for know feed back on the 7.3 gasser what ive heard is the mpg is 15 hwy ten pulling i only get 11.5 with my 6.7 and little less pulling it is a dually so not quite the mpg as with a single wheel

ALL of the pickup diesels are problematic today IMO. They are a costly option as you pointed out. They are also VERY costly to repair when they fail which is frequently. I would not buy a new diesel pickup today. Their splendor has faded, if they ever had any. However I don't have any firsthand knowledge/experience with the newer 7.3 gas engine.
yes at minimum its 2000 everytime the hood has to be opened for any work .
from the 6.9 to the 6,0 powerstroke i could work on them myself not the new ones i replaced an alternator and belt on my 6.7 and that was a job you damn sure wont do it on the roadside plus here normally from dec to about march you best have number one diesel in or be gelled up and that always seems to get up to about 3.00 a gallon
According to my friend, a top notch mechanic, the 7.3 gassers have problems with the exhaust manifold gaskets. Not an easy fix.
Sorry, my 7.3 is a PowerStroke... 2001 with 130K on it that will probably last longer than I do.
I wouldn't buy a new diesel today just based on the price. Who pays 70K for a truck? The gas 7.3 is supposed to be a beast, but you can bet it won't get squat for mileage!
thats the kinda info im looking for
my 02 f 350 dually with 7.3 ps is at 372000 miles but not original engine i got it really hot pulling sled trailer out in the mountains with tuning program set on high all the exhaust manifolds and turbo were gowing bright cherry red i run it for another year then switched out for a lower mileage engine {that i scored on cheap} when it started pumping engine oil into antifreeze im sure it was just o rings on oil cooler but switched anyways... the 7.3 is a hell of a good engine it had minor problems as all engine do but was easy to work on
Here you go.. not bad on fuel economy especially with a 4.30 rear gear. My 4x4 f250 with 3.73 rear gears, the old 6.2 gas and 6 speed auto beats it about 1.5 mpg. That ugly front spoiler does not improve fuel economy..I took mine off.

Have you looked at the 6.7 Cummins? I've had Cummins in the last 3 p/u's I've owned. They don't have quite the power of the P/S diesel's, but are pretty darn close to them, run on 6 cylinders, rather than 8, at 30% less rpm, meaning less wear on the motor. I've put close to a million miles on the last 3 Cummins that I've owned, and had very few problems with them. I do a 70/30 regular haul of empty/21,000 5th wheel trailer....
I only know of one new 7.3 gas Ford around here and the guy hauls loads of cattle about daily, 28 feet trailer. He said power is not a problem but it does like gas. He is very impressed with it so far. The 7.3 gas engine is old school design and simple compared to most. IT makes its power with displacement and is overbuild.

We just returned from an 1800 mile trip in a rented F250 w/6.2 gasser. Bed full of empty coolers going out and 600# of elk meat coming back so basically no load on the 3/4 tonner. Most of the miles were Kansas and SE Colorado with less than 400 of the miles being Walsenburg CO to Chama NM and back. MPG was very poor at a round trip average of 11.4. At no time did I see MPG better than 16 except coasting downhill.
I'd expect the bigger engine to be even lower MPG. Front end design of newer FORD create a LOT of wind resistance. Very noticeable on the flatland with a headwind.
A friend of mine has one. He says he only gets about 9 MPG. But then I've ridden with him on numerous occassions and his right foot is pretty spastic.

My 2000 F350 has the old 6.8 V10. It beats 10 MPG but just barely. I think the "10" in V10 stands for the gas mileage.
As a reference, Son's twenty year old 8.1 Chevy got around 10 MPG on a trip 1/2 way across Kansas last spring. THE RETURN TRIP WAS PULLING A 12000 # 16 ROW PLANTER AT 40 MPH OR LESS.
I'm not sure I'd drive a Ford if they were giving them away.
Please. Learn how to start and stop sentences. That was the most painful post I have read the last several years. Grammar. Heard of it?
My 99 Chevy 1500 van is a high top with 5.7 and will average 16 mpg combined if I run 65 on the highway. If I run 80 she goes right down to 13.5 mpg. Axle is 3.73 Posi.
Please forgive me!
I was so excited about finding out any info on the 7.3, I forgot my grammar!😉
I found a pickup just like one I had built online.
Dealership has is advertised with vin number and in transit,
I called them and they said they cant sell it yet. WTF?
cowdoc , from my 20+ years experience in buying insurance/ dealer cars, the usual cause for the delay is that yes, they are in stock, but don't have the title yet.
Wow, You gave them a chance. Now go to another dealer, tell them what you want and they will get on a locator , find it and have it delivered to their dealership. Or after they find it, go get it yourself from that dealer. Godzilla will be home for Christmas. Perfect time of yr to buy... Dealers aren't selling many vehicles.
No Craigs List there???
