Why was this man shot and killed?

WOW, I can't find any info on if he was at his own home. Very disturbing.

Murder implies intent to kill, the officer mistook the keys in his hand for a gun, for absolutely no good reason I agree, but not out of desire to kill. It is clearly homicide, but legally I think it falls into a different category than murder. He does deserve justice for sure though. No one that jumpy and untrained should be out at 130AM taking calls as someone "protecting and serving". This was panic, fear, and inexperience causing tragedy. We NEED better training for police. We need to stop these tragedies from happening somehow. He didn't deserve to die on his own property committing no crime. He didnt deserve to be immediately assumed as violent. He didnt deserve to die. Hope his family gets justice.

@jaymesmorrow the officer had 89 complaints on file. And some were showing he was in the wrong multiple time. Why did he still have a job. Its insane

I think I can address why he still had a job. The rest, well, talk about multiple issues.

He has a government job. Once you have a government job, the unions have seen to it that you have lifetime job security. It is very hard to fire any holder of a government job, be it cop, school teacher, on and on and on, the list of government jobs is long and growing annually.

    Does not look good.

Bad that there is no audio until after the shooting.

Police nation-wide have a hard enough time without things like this exacerbating the problem.

I can't understand his shooting a man and not checking on him or rendering help. He shot him and let him die on the floor unassisted like a rabid dog.

The confusion in the mans mind as he was blinded by the flashlight must have been horrid. As far as I can determine from further research he was in his own home.

Cops better stop the trigger happy crap and make darn sure there is a weapon before firing. My God, I feel so bad for that family.

Most LEO shoots are good and well justified in the LEO's use of deadly force. But the few really bad shoots taint the whole and these bad apples must be weeded out before more Citizens get shot to death by happy triggers.

Some of them are pretty jumpy it seems. It's not a job for just anyone. If you can't remain calm and thinking clearly in stressful situations, you need to look at other career choices.

Yep, a big part of the problem in the USA relative to government unions. Incompetence, partisanship, and outright bad behavior rewarded.

Look at the DEMOCRAT socialist indoctrination and hatred of America as founded going on in government schools.

One last note: I for one will NEVER trust anything expressed as "News" by the media. Corrupt partisan media is a far worse threat to truth. These people have made it clear their disdain for law enforcement. Best wait for grand jury findings, however if the officer is in the right, media will probably ignore it.

The Chief of Police has recommended terminating the officer. Only the Director of Public safety can fire him. A hearing is scheduled next Monday. Looks the local government is trying to distance themselves from the officer's actions.

Appears to be another case where body cams weren't turned on until after the encounter ended.
