rats in a barrel
we have trash cans in the chicken coop to store corn / feed and even bread ( we get for a couple dollars a cart load at a bread store outlet )
my wife has a slight fear of rats one or two she deals with no problem any way she was feeding the birds and pulling a few empty bread wrappers out of the trash can she then noticed and jumped back ( per her words ) several rats were under the wrappers and started jumping and screeching .
so I had duty to dispatch them . armed with a pellet gun ( crosman 177 pump pistol ) early today being the defender of the property . I ventured out and sure enough the rats about 1/2 grown must have played follow the leader last night , all were jumping trying to get out but only manage about 3/4 of the way up ,the old term shooting fish in a barrel comes to mind but the kill count was ten and the wife was safe once more

Whenever I empty a feed barrel I try to leave a half-handful of corn in the bottom then leave the lid askew.
Next morning, I usually have a live mouse or two for the cats. Best trap I have ever used.
Oh Em Gee, I need to try that for those pesky voles. Give them an easy access into it by a plank against the side!! Thanks for the ingenious idea. Woot, woot!!
Smear peanut butter around an empty paper towel tube and slip it over a 1/4" or so rod of some kind. Lay that across the barrel near the ramp just close enough they can allllllllllmost reach it.
I don't know if PB would work for voles, but it's the cats meow for rats and mice.
