At Bass Pro Today.....

William81William81 Member Posts: 25,510 ✭✭✭✭

I was over in a nearby city buying items for our bathroom remodels currently in progress and stopped off at Bass Pro to look at a few items. The Ammo isle was about empty with some rifle ammo and self defense .45 ammo....

A nice older guy (he had to be pretty old because he was a lot older than me).....asked me to assist him...

He had three boxes of rifle ammo in the basket of his scooter and wanted to know if there was anything posted on how much he could buy. I read the sign to him about 3 boxes or 150 rounds....he said what a bunch of crap !!! He thanked me and rolled away...

There were a bunch of ammo vultures hanging out waiting for them to stock the shelves....this poor stock guy rolled out with a cart full of boxes with different ammo marked boxes...a couple of guys almost ran over the guy....It was all shotgun ammo.

I decided it was time to leave......I would not want that stock guys job no matter what it paid !!!!

The Bass pro here had 2 boxes of 338 lapua and 1 box of 240 weatherby and the heaviest shotgun shells they had was #4 game loads and zero handgun ammo.

    my experience

one of the earlier panic buying feeding frenzies some years back I was working third shift so it got to be a hobby / habit to stop by Walmart in town on the way home the only place that had ammo or guns with in 30 miles

there was always a line out side or at the sporting goods dept some actually had chairs set up beside the counters every day waiting there for a shipment to arrive I think there is/ was a web site that would say when each Walmart was to receive a shipment of guns or ammo just not what it would be

the Walmart dept manager told me he did not even know it was always wait and see when they got the shipments as to what was in them it was determined by higher up the food chain distribution

another fun fact lots of people would actually run I do mean run back to the dept when the doors would open in case any thing was stocked during the night and then the campers would take there positions in lawn chairs ( the small folding camping type ) sit all day when they would roll out a cart the employee would be mobbed , they did not even bother to stock the shelfs just hand it right off the cart

of course when the shipment was just shotgun shells a big moan was heard LOL the dept manager started just putting a small amount several times a day of ammo if they had any to get more people the chance at the ammo same with the rifles good gestor but failed any way

then I heard some of the sporting goods employees were stashing ammo or guns under the counter or leaving them in the back room telling evey one no we do not have any and calling the family or buddies to come and get them so that started the only one allowed to get the guns out of the locker was the dept manager to help control that if he was not around people had to wait on him I would wager 90% was sold in the secondary market for 2 to 4 x as much especially the black rifles

honest it was amazing just to watch the winners all excited to run out to the cars with latest score and of course the looser hanging their head as they walked away I can only imagine how its going to get shortly with all this it seems to be a lot worse

I've had good luck with ammo at Bass Pro, but you have to get there about 30 minutes before they open so you can take your place in line. Once those doors opened civility falls by the wayside, people run, people with carts start ramming other people while running...just stupid. It's ridiculous, with the buying limits in place there's usually plenty of ammo to go around, of course there is always one or two guys piling well over their limit into their cart, sometimes the cashier catches it, usually they don't.

Black markets and marketers have been around for many centuries, I'm just waiting until there's a food shortage and it's coming soon......... that's when I'll get'em back 😀

About the only thing that has stayed on the shelf around here are 12 boxes of 350 Legend.

I'm half tempted to go buy 'em and put 'em up on the auction side just to see what they do...

I buy 350 L ammo any chance i get because i have one and it's about the only ammo that when you see it, it's still priced about where it should be

During the previous panic, it appeared to me that the clerks at the 2 nearest Walmarts were selling ammo to their friends only. The ammo then showed up at local gunshows at much increased prices.

After the panic, I stocked up for the next panic - it's heeeere!

I realize that there are a lot of new gun owners now and feel sorry that they can't get any ammo to practice with. I don't feel sorry for the so called experienced shooters that have lived through multiple shortages since 9/11 and didn't learn anything. While I support GunBroker, the gougers still tick me off a bit. I probably have more ammo than I will ever use with the exception of 17HMR. I am on a notify list with several reputable dealers and will wait because I refuse to buy it on the secondary market and pay 3-4 times the retail price. No hurry because I still have 500 or so and can be patient unlike the buyers driving up the price on the auction side. I will give kudos to some of the big guys like Bass Pro for pretty much holding the line on prices during all of these panic driven shortages. Some have complained in the past that they were a little more expensive than other places but their prices look pretty darn good now. Bob

This time it’s ammo. Only a few months back it was toilet paper. One only has to have been in/around any large US population center during a significant weather event, etc, to realize that we’re only a gnat’s a** away from a total melt down of society as we know it. Panic and the “I'll get mine” mob mentality take over in the blink of an eye. It seems the more allegedly “civilized” we get, the quicker things tend to go in the toilet at the drop of a hat.

Awhile back l started a thread ''Will trade toilet paper for primers''🤑

  • hillbillehillbille Member Posts: 14,461 ✭✭✭✭

stopped at small gun shop on way home from VA yesterday, no primers but about half stocked on powder, got lb of clays for $18.00, thought that was still reasonable in todays world, noticed the gun rack was still 3/4 full didn't go look very close as to selection just noticed it was almost full, reloading bullets were low less than 1/4 of shelf stocked and only few boxes of them, same on ammo, didn't think to go look at prices and selection though. will stop next week when have my next appointment as I think I will try universal as a substitue for unique, which has been my only powder for all my pistol and shotgun reloading... and even though they had a sign on the door masks must be worn, no employees had one on, sort of refreshing to see faces again

I haven't been in a "gun shop" for months and probably not anytime soon. Just walking through the hunting area of Farm Fleet or Farm and Home stores is bad enough. I've had several phone calls asking if I had any extra ammo to sell. Only a couple of very close friends got an affirmative.

I did offer a couple of cases of steel shot waterfowl loads in lieu of buckshot to one caller. I can't use it anymore and at current pricing it's a 400% profit so no real downside.
