any way one of the fellows was stationed on the Ohio river guarding barges ( filled with gasoline ) they had a rifle but as stated no ammo and not allowed to have any just a scare tactic
he said people were stealing gas at night while the barges were tied up ( like 5 to 20 gallons due to rationing ) the guards started to just walk away and take a leak or a break when any one showed up to steal it they would hear or see them headed they way . seems too many of them ( guards ) were found or woke up in a ditch or on the barge with a large lump on the head thanks to the bag guys who learned quick guns were empty and would bushwack them . the guards including my old buddy said the group of guards stationed there decided any noise or strangers they would for the most part let them know they were taking a walk or break speaking very loudly so any one could hear and comment I would return in 10 or 20 minutes . there thought better to loose a few gallons of gas to the locals that get hit on the head. he agreed sad but desperate times and not worth the danger over a few gallons of gas that was being rationed by the government and also the thought of shooting some one for stealing 3 to 5 gallons of gas for there car or house was not worth it
