A troublesome visit to Bass Pro........

William81William81 Member Posts: 25,507 ✭✭✭✭

Out and about today so we ran by Bass Pro...I was looking through hunting clothes to replace some shirts etc and check out what they had...after finding what I wanted, I headed over to the ammo isle to see what might be available. They was NO ammo and the area where they usually stocked it was filled in with other items.

A gentleman that arrived about he same time as me asked a worker behind the gun counter where the ammo is being displayed....the counter guy said "we don't have any ammo" When questioned further all he said again was "we don't have any ammo....Not really sure what to make of this....

Anyone heard anything about them getting out of the ammo biz.....?

I just have to get this out. It has been stuck in my craw for a month.....

The video on youtube of the ammo plant manager saying they are running full tilt and producing all they can. That may be true but where is it going???

Because I can tell you it is not going to the retailers. Whether the retailer is big like Cabelas or a small shop they are all telling me they are not getting any shipments in.

So I say the claim that new gun owners are buying it all up is BS. If it isn't going to the retailers there is nothing to buy up.

I don't have an answer and can come up with a number of new conspiracy theories about where the ammo is going.

Anything is possible but I doubt if. They are probably having the same problems as everyone else getting any ammo to stock their shelves. In the meantime empty shelves cost money so they may as well use them for the product they have. This seems to be a bigger panic than the 9/11 or the Obama buying sprees. It is going to take a long time for the manufacturers to catch up. Biden and the dems are better ammo and gun salesmen than Obama and that's saying a lot. Bob

I can attest to the fact retailer's are getting ammo. We get a anywhere from 2-3 cases up to a half pallett we unload with a forklift almost everyday. Everything we put out, limit either 1 or 2 boxes depending on scarcity, is scarfed up within hours....and I'm in a very rural area, I could only imagine what it would be like to be in a huge town. We sold more ammo the last 6 months than we have any other year...ever.

There's no conspiracy, just huge unprecedented demand.

First time ammo disappeared was Y2K

Second/third time ammo disappeared was 2008/2012 election years

Fourth time ammo disappeared was 2020 election theft

Some folks don't see the writing on the wall

Buy it right, seal it tight, store it right-- lots of folks still have Y2K leftovers.

It was just weird the counter guy would not say anything other than we don't have any...last time I was there, the shelves had some .223, misc .17HMR, some .22 and other centerfire rifle...the other side had a ton of 12 and 20 ga. shotgun shells of various makers and loads...there was no place left to put the ammo so it seemed like they do not intent to get any in the near future.....

It does not matter to me over all...I just found it odd they did not leave a place to display it....

Made a run to check on one of the larger dealers near me today . Plenty of 32 acp and 32 s&w . Limited shotgun ammo except for 28 gauge . Did finally see 4 boxes of 30-06 , first I have seen in three months

Problem is the horders are still grabbing up everything they can get their hands on whether they need it or not!

I went to Cabela, yesterday and no ammo upstairs, where normal . Near the register, downstairs, they had a rolling rack with some bricks of `Fed .22 for $30 and some Mini mags

For a long time we were told the manufacturers were fulfilling government orders. Now the claim is hoarding. When I look at ammunition sales on the auction side there are alot of brands I've never heard of before. Clearly they are getting components. Something is just not adding up.

Here they figured out what day the ammo shipment comes in and they line up. The ammo doesn't make it the shelves that just have a a shopping basket and they hand it out till it is empty the only thing that may make it to the shelf is if it is a oddball chambering and high dollar

...But also, how many times a day does the counter guy get the same question; Hey where's the ammo??

I visited two gun shops today. One had quite a bit of ammo at higher prices. The other had a good bit but at exorbitant prices.

I did, however, find Hornaday 9mm dies at a reasonable price that can’t be had online.

Also, 1 lb cans of Winchester WST powder for $25.99.

Stand there a while and listen. Better yet, get a job working there. About the 37th time before noon some yahoo walks up and wants the full five-minute explanation of why the shelves are bare and you'll begin to grasp why the answers a clerk gives can be a bit curt.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

We have a small local chain store that sells guns and ammo. They put a sign up that asks customers not to cuss at the people behind the counter because there is no ammo. If I was there and heard someone cussing and employee for that, they would get an ear full...

  • shootuadealshootuadeal Member Posts: 5,301 ✭✭✭✭

I wish I could "like" that 100 times. It's getting very old having to explain to someone over the phone or in person every 5 minutes why there is no ammo.

As someone who was behind the counter through a couple of these shortages before retiring, you have my sympathies. It was like magic when Trump got elected and the panic buying stopped. It only took a couple of months to see full shelves again. I'm afraid this time with Biden it will only get worse for a while. Bob

I'm pretty sure his answer means that they don't have any ammo.

IMO Bass Pro has ruined Cabelas. We have 3 Cabelas here in Washington and they all used to have great clothing selection and ammo was plentiful and reasonable. After being bought out that all changed. Long before 2020. I have been supporting my local gun dealers as much as possible. We have one guy who isn’t gouging and does have ammo. If you live in the PNW if you have a Bi-Mart you can get ammo there if you check in early but you are limited to two boxes. Sadly it’s not going back to the good ole days of fully stocked shelves for a long time. I have tons of reloading supplies but I’m hanging on to that

  • mac10mac10 Member Posts: 2,753 ✭✭✭✭

as far as i can tell it is never going back

Just to debunk the myth a little further about retailers not getting ammo.

Here's part of today's ammo delivery, this came on a pallet but I believe it could have been better sent FedEx or ups truck instead of a semi. Pretty paltry but consisted of the following:

80 boxes of blazer brass 9mm

    8 Winchestet 200rd value packs of 5.56mm

    5 100rd boxes of Winchester 38special

    1 1000rd bulk pack of Winchester 5.56

    50 20rd pmc X-tac(1 case)

    10 50rd boxes Winchester military service 45acp

    10 100rd packs of Winchester 9mm

1 cci independence 1000rd bulk pack of 9mm

    10 Hornady Critical Duty 9mm

The above is just the stuff on this pallett I just unloaded. Bunch of hodgepodge.

Same thing at academy, the ammo isle was stocked with non ammo items. There were two boxes of 7.62x54r inside a glass case.
