Engine for sale,Needs freshening up.Is that new valve cover gaskets? Does it need new heads and valve train?New crank, rods and pistons? I have stayed away from those because I dont know what needs freshened up means.

All of the above and other things as well. It's like, "she has a great personality, you will love her."
moving parts need replaced
I'm starting to resemble that remark!
Yep, and when people say that they are implying that one can just "freshen" it with rings, bearings, gaskets and seals. When in all actuality, to do a professional and correct job, it needs bored, line honed, crank ground, new cam, full compliment of cylinder head work. You know, the full meal deal.
In non-mechanical terms, it means "stay away"....
Cylinder honing, crank shaft journals measured for NEW bearings, timing chain replacement. ALL new gaskets etc., etc.
... be afraid, be very afraid, unless you want to get your hands dirty ! >In non-mechanical terms.
Then what is a rebuild?
"Freshening up"!
Rebuild = Accurate description of ‘Freshening up’
Remove floor mats and replace car.
That is a wore out engine.
So when we’re out to dinner and my favorite wife excuses herself to “freshen up” I can expect Gina Carano to come back from the powder room?
(ducking and running)
Means you can buy a good used motor for the price of making that one run!
I would say at least new bearings, rings, seals, valve job most likely and gaskets that's a freshen up but it may be a complete machine shop start over "freshen up " ( my guess )
every seller has a different view compared to the buyer is my experience
20 some odd years ago a co-worker and I would go along with each other to look at cars / trucks we were interested in buying so a second set of eyes and had no dog in the fight to look more close and ask questions over looked
99% time did we not need a second person pulling into the drive way was enough some times never even left the car many times when I would see the like new no rust jewel for sale ( pre internet ) then the get out walk around and leave maybe 2% of the time I would actual have the seller open the hood or start something . walked away countless times I am sure most every one on here who has bought or searched out a specific vehicle has countless stories like mine
one your post brings to mind my buddy wanted a jeep the seller told him I just rebuilt the engine (wow )
so we drive a hour or so meet the fellow in a parking lot with his jeep and talking with him we ask what he had done .. yep I rebuilt it , just a couple days ago, I put in new plugs , plug wires and points .. our response
aahhh that's a tune up not a rebuild . have you always been stupid . wasted two hours driving that day
Year, type, and miles?
That sounds like the famous "It ran when parked."
in 1947.
"freshening up" = Money Pit = Some one else's headache !
Means the engine is worn..low compression.. and needs a total rebuild. There lies the problem... has the engine been rebuilt before.. now needing bored out again.. to the limits it cannot be rebuilt again. You do not know that answer till it is disassembled and checked. I would only buy that type of engine if the seller would let me disassemble it and check it prior to purchase.
