Our base was bombed again

Mr. PerfectMr. Perfect Member, Moderator Posts: 66,437 ******

I spose y'all have seen it on the news. It's tragic that our military base was hit with missiles again, and this time a life was lost.

I just want to say that I am very proud to be a part of a design team that and makes products that go into our Patriot and THAAD missile defense platforms. Hopefully, these can be employed as protection for those serving in the affected areas.

I read that 10 rockets were fired at Al Asad airbase. The guy who died had a heart attack during the attack.

I was at Al Asad in 2005 it was a Marine Base and it is located near the Tigris River in western Iraq toward the Syrian Border. It was a ruff area in 05 and I am sure it didn't get better with ISIL in the area.

I also read that some of the rockets were intercepted no word on how many or by what system.

The same base was bombed when Trump was in charge, so it's been quite consistent in that regard.

    And it just started🤨

It is a very large base and its close to Syria and the area where there is still a lot of conflict going on. I am sure the perpetrators will be found and eliminated soon. ISIL controled the area for several months when barry was in charge during the so called "Arab spring"

    @bpost

"Get our troops out of that cesspool and let the natives sort it out. Sorting it out on the African continent is killing each other down to the last man standing. It is the way they have solved problems for tens of thousands of years and our pouring trillions of dollars into the region ain't gonna fix or help it."

As far as getting our "troops out" they are volunteers and they are doing what they volunteered to do. The people there are not conscripts forced to fight. The guy who had a Heart Attack was making big bucks to be there as a contractor. I hate he died but that is part of the deal. I was a military contractor for 12 years. Sometimes I was an armed contractor sometimes I was not. I knew the danger going in and I was paid for it by either the DoS or the JFKSWC.

I would rather we fight them there and keep them off balance than to let them do their deeds, get organized and hit the US. Very few of our soldiers are actively fighting and the ones who are all know the risks and the enemy and want to be there they are well trained and equipped. Its not just a bunch of guys dropped off from a UH-1 and sent to do Movement to contact. They have targets and great intell along with support from all branches of the military.

Al-Q has a new new leader and he is determined to make a "Name" for himself and outdo OBL. He is an Egyptian and he is determined to attack the US.

This is just my opinion but it the opinion of a guy who was there and fought them for 6 years.

The base is pretty vulnerable to this sort of attack. There aren't good bunkers for the missiles being fired, so I hope (and the point of my post) we can get some good (or more) defense systems in place quickly.

I agree @Mr. Perfect . Its been years since I was there but the place was attacked just about everyday i was there with either motars or rockets. The planes have revetments on the airfield but for the soldiers it was large tents and wooden building..............Now this was 15 years ago and ISIL took the base from the Iraqi army so there is no telling what kind of defensive emplacements they have.

I would suspect they have some type of counter battery radar and some anti missile defense but its a big, very big base. The size of McCord in WA easy. Its also kind of in the middle of nowhere and on high ground so it would be easy to target. There is a lot of "dead" ground around it and I am sure when ISIL was there they knew the area well. I know the THAAD works really well as does the Patriot............well done working on those, you must be a smart guy😉

There was a 60 minutes special on Saturday or Sunday (I forget which) that discussed it, focusing on the last attack and the aftermath. Amazingly, they corrected course quite a bit on the liberal media spin that trounced Trump for saying there were no casualties right after the first attack. But one of the things they highlighted (good or bad) was the lack of bunkers adequate to protect against the missiles being fired.

One thing I will add, and some here will know what this means (maybe more than I) is there has been an order placed for our units in the AMS-STD-595 color 30372.

When I was there they had some bunkers but not many. The attacks were more of a "harassment" type than a targeted attack.

Believe it or not the base guards when I was there were Ugandan Soldiers mixed in with some Marines.

The bunkers were concrete tubes you would use for diverting water under a road with sand bags all around. You piled in and waited for the all clear.

I so totally agree that we need to be Israel's protector but I'm 100% sure the commies are going to throw Israel under the bus.
