Lumber prices are insane

I am going to insulate my work shed. I went to Lowes looking at 24" insulation. There was a great supply of standard 7/16" OSB, stacked to the moon. It was $28.95 a sheet! The insulation in 93" bats was $95.00 a bundle. I need five bundles plus some more in 16" widths.
Treated lumber was 4 times the cost before China Virus.
No way. I am not paying that much for insulation dimensional boards and OSB. The projects will just have to wait until prices come back down.
This world is getting way to weird for my liking.

Everything is up at least 25%
Too bad timber prices didn't follow
After the devastation from the Gulf hurricanes, lumber became both scarce and expensive. Just like guns/ammo after the election.
Add in all the DIY stuff that went on while folks were hiding at home and there's the cause.
Consider the spray foam insulation .
chinese bought the forest lands
Everybody's doing their part around here. Loaded loggers are rolling by the house before 05:00. Probably 50 loads a day going by.
My brother works for an agriculture building company. They build and equip hog , turkey and chicken houses . The cost to build the stock sized chicken house jumped by $65, 000.00 dollars over the last two months . . Due to lumber price increases
pulsarnc "$65, 000.00 dollars"
Wow that must be a very fancy chicken coop...
CHEAP interest rates and lots of people at home..... telework, unemployment insurance, or just plain no job. This is starting to look a LOT like the housing bust back in 08. EVERYONE gets a cheap loan, then the rates go up, because the WILL on all variable rate loans, then they cannot afford to make the payment. Looks bad to me, just my 2 cents.
Here in SC timber prices are down on pine saw timber over a dollar in a year, http://www.state.sc.us/forest/timberprices.htm?
Go figure I guess the same if beef goes up its never the rancher cleaning up always someone in the middle.
Inflation has to eventually rear up with all the free money being tossed around.
Seeing wood lots of 150 year old pine trees being cleared and sold.
The last year or so soft maples, huge old trees because there had not been much demand for those trees in past years. There was always more desirable timber to be cut and sold.
Just a casual observation, but around here I have never seen logging operations bother with pine in the past because this is hardwoods area.
Demand is high and I just hope they are not selling to c h i n a , let them eat cake.
Lumber prices will be up for quite a while. Lots of builders have slabs on the ground just waiting for lumber prices to fall and then buy the material to finish them out. Then their buying will cause the prices, due to supply and demand, to go right back up.
I personally think there is a good chance the mills are slowing production to drive the market price up.
I also wonder if the pre-appraisals for a new construction build will be high enough to cover the current extra cost of a build. If it costs more than an appraisal, then the construction loan might be a no-go for a consumer.
Most framing and sheeting goods have all but double around here.
Better plan months ahead for you needs and be prepared to make a second choice, or third!
Yep, about a year ago, I bought some 8' treated 4x4s, almost $20 piece, nuts.
TO day I bought a sheet of 3/4 red oak from Lowe`s 63.00 dollars and it came from Thailand.
Ruger4me , I should explain that the chicken houses I am talking about range from buildings that are 20,000 square feet and up . They range from 40x500 up to 60x600 ft . How big depends on the specs for that particular company . When I started in the commercial broiler production in 1969 our houses were 40x250and cost roughly $10,000.00 to 12,000.00 . Now one house will run $1,000,000.00 to 1,250,000.00 per house or more . Most farmers will build complexes of from 4 to 10 houses at the time . You do the math !
One of the guys at work said a builder quoted him $400. a square foot to build a house.I assume the builder did not want the job. At those prices a small 1000 SF home would be $400,000.
I think I paid $48 a sheet 2 years ago.
I manage my tree farm for timber, and Im not seeing the price on timber. Having a hard time finding a decent market.
Of course those boards are expensive! Lumber doesn't grow on trees, y'know.....
Wait-what?
Never mind..........
WOW! One of my first regular paying jobs back in the late 60's was grill cooking at a McDonalds.
A franchise to own your very own McDonalds restaurant back then was a cool million. That included the building and all equipment.
pulsarnc OK I was just kidding, I thought you had made a typo and you were talking about a coop for a home owner.
For that price I would buy a used home , disassemble it.. and put the new one together..
