First fish of the year.....Pic and a little story....
No it is not much of a fish but it always feels good to hook the first one of the season.....this one is proof there are crappies in a little conservation lake I have fished for over 10 years. Last year I ran into an old character at this lake and we talked about fishing and what is swimming around out there.
I told him I had caught bass, bluegill, crappies and a few catfish. The old guy looked me in the eye and said "There ain't no crappies in that lake and there never has been" So I told the guy I had caught several over the years but as I am mainly a bass fisherman, I really have not sought them out. His response was " I don't know if I would even believe there was one in there if I saw a picture of one"
I think I have proof now....and I threw it back so I know there still at least on crappies in there (and likely a bunch of them )...I should run into him one of these mornings as it gets warmer out and he is down there fishing for catfish....
I look forward to his response...
Anyone else been wetting a line yet ??
And it was a pretty sunset on the way home !!

Still hard water fishing here. Ice is still more than a foot thick!
This lake was iced over less than a week ago....I was surprised I caught this one and missed another bite or two. I was looking for bald eagles to photograph and just decided to toss a lure in for the fun of it....glad I did !
What are you catching in the "hard water" this time of year ???
Wait, I read that other post where you said they were not biting. Looks like they were.
Our lake is too full to fish right now and it too cold here for me to be out fishing. Nice little crappie.
My fishing license expired March 1st and I have yet to get a new one for 2021. Just celebrated my 65th B\D last month, so I can now get the states senior discount on the package hunting\fishing everything needed for the whole year of outdoor sports!
Can't wait for the trout season to open up last weekend in April!
William, that crappie just needed some relatives to accompany him into the frying pan for a fine meal! Nice clean looking fish which is what you see during the early cold water months of the season!
Reminds me I need to buy my hunting and fishing license for this year. Like you have clearly shown, it's time to get out there.
I picked up my Sportsman’s license last week. That is what gave me the itch to get out there !
I put my brand new Tracker Classic in the water for the first time yesterday. I don't plan to even take a rod along until the motor break-in is done, and I saw only a few other trailers in the lot. Most of our lakes are still frozen, but this one is at the lowest altitude anywhere nearby and it's open.
My son and his friends got the first few perch of the year yesterday. Looks like the Chesapeake Bay is starting to wake up for the season. Snakeheads were uncooperative but will be hungry soon.
Just celebrated my 65th B\D last month,
Happy Birthday! Next you will be asking for the senior discount on Gunbroker and telling everyone how you are on a fixed income. My mother used to say that and I would laugh and say, "Yeah, but your income is fixed higher than 80% of the country makes working." Hope it is the same for you.☺️
Thursday they were not biting....Friday they were !!!!
Happy Birthday......
You are correct on the need to catch a nice bunch.....suppose to be warmer this weekend so I will head out next week when my usual fishing spots are pretty much empty and I can have them almost to myself....
Humm, you bring up an interesting comment.
Just how many fish are in a "nice bunch"?
Same as a "bait" of something as in, I just ate a big bait of grapes.
Inquiring minds need to know such things
If I am feeding my bride and myself it takes six to eight....If friends are coming over 15 to 20 and when the neighbors all get together for an evening up to a couple hundred depending on the crowd !!!
