There is NO crack in the gun. It is the side plate seam where the side plate and frame meet. There is no reason to rate me a F when there is nothing wrong with the gun,.

I had someone call me in a tizzy over a crack in their gun.....I quickly realized it was the plate area they were talking about. They hung up and I never heard from them again. Sometimes these F feedbacks give you the opportunity to reply and post what a moron they are for everyone to see.

Its really interesting. You would expect someone winning a gun like that is a seasoned collector. And therefore has some fundamental knowledge if what they are buying.
Times have changed.
I posted a Smith & Wesson Model 64 for sale. One close-up photo showed the recoil shield, and a sharp-eyed potential bidder asked me if there were a crack in the recoil shield. I didn't think there was, or I would not have put the gun up for sale.
So, I got the gun in hand, and carefully examined it. Sure enough, there was a horizontal crack in the lower part of the recoil shield. What might have caused it is anyone's guess. I am inclined to believe it is a defect in the original frame forging or casting, whatever S&W uses.
I ended the auction and the gun is with Smith & Wesson now. We'll see how they want to handle this. Here is a picture of the crack. Strange, ain't it?

Machine finish on that looks terrible
It is difficult to get a good finish on cracked material.

I would have thought that quality control would have spotted those machine marks even if the crack wasn't easily detectable.
Agreed. Basic machining is a 125 finish. That is no where close
If you got a S&W with a crack, (some folks call that a side plate), just get out your handy dandy Mig/Tig welder and fix the darn thing.
Did S&W agree to replace the frame?

The gripe about the side plate seam ranks down there with the guy who complained about the rings inside the cylinder chambers. He said the gun had been fired so much the steel was cut in the chambers! Don't these guys have any other revolvers to compare them to?
The guy who caught the flaw on Nunn's gun DID know what he was talking about. I have never seen a frame crack there before and S&W should easily see it is a manufacturing defect. Hope they still have some Model 64 frames on hand.

There's just so much going on in that sentence.
1) do not purchase from buyer???
2) how is a crack (were there one) able to be representative of the gun?
3) the crack is hard to see because there isn't one.
4) there are multiple detailed photos, you can literally see everything even whether or not there are small cracks (there aren't)

No. Not yet, anyway. They sent an emailed receipt for the gun, but that's all I've gotten from them so far.
A while back, I had a 642 that had a crack in the frame beneath where the barrel screws in. The hole where the barrel goes was apparently drilled off-center, and when the barrel was turn in, it actually cracked the frame and a little bit of the barrel was visible through the crack. For that one, Smith & Wesson just sent me a new one. And, they gave me a choice of lock or no lock! I chose no lock, of course!
