Still slinging heavy lead over 100 years after it was invented by John Moses Browning, with few changes since introduction.
I watch WWII videos of them shooting it and drool over the brass they left behind on the ground, shuffled through and tripped over in the belly of a bomber or dropped from the sky from fighters by the BILLIONS of rounds.
It is still, over a century old, doing the job of heavy machine gun service for US forces. The round has proven to be a effective weapon in bolt action guns for sniping too. But, for long range engagements with stupendous terminal performance nothing on the battle field has proven more useful or reliable.
Well done Mr. Browning, RIP.

Always a favorite!
The Ma Duece is a nice addition to any .50 BMG collection.

Have fired perhaps a thousand rounds of it - from the nose of an F-80.
And in a sense of irony, I killed a deuce and a half with a Ma Deuce. Two rounds. One was enough. The second was accidental.
I've fired BMGs plenty of times, but I'd trade those experiences just to fire the guns in an F-80! There are countless places that anyone can go to rent a machinegun. Flight time in a fully armed jet fighter is a bit tougher to arrange.
Once you get started...kinda hard to stop...😁

Mark, in Ground Attack School, we carried 50 rounds for each of the twin 50s. Those 100 rounds went by awfully damn fast. You'd get MAYBE three passes at the strafe target. BRRRRRP was about 20 rounds per gun.
(And yes, you could feel it, hear it, and then smell it in the cockpit as you pulled 4 Gs off the target.)
One, (Ma Duece) will definitely rock a 5 ton with a ring mount over the passenger seat
Nothing like the sound!
I would bet I have fired 50K rounds easy. I love it but it is a PITA to get shooting right, but once its dialed in it is a killer.
Dang, Rocky, you should write a book.
And ya know what? JMB proportioned the 50 round off the 30-06 round. Take that all you 270 lovers!😛😝🤣
Had he stuffed a .449 diameter bullet in there (to keep things proportional) it would have been FAR more devastating!
Phhhtttt!!!
Ah yes, the 50 BMG ! After years of salivating over the prospect of getting to try one out, it finally happened! The company was scheduled to go to the range for Familiarization and Instruction...I could hardly wait. Comes the big day and we're off to the range! Imagine my disappointment when we arrived at the THOUSAND INCH range. Shooting at a post card sized target with a dot in the middle. 😫
