Cabela's

Does anyone still shop at Cabela's any more? It seems, since the takeover by Bass Pro Shops, the product quality and selection has tanked considerably. It's little more than a WalMart camping section now, yet the prices are too high to compete with WalMart.

I don't think I have been in the local one here in over 6 months. At one point there was a great selection of collectible and/or interesting firearms going through the gun library. Not so much anymore.

The catalog I just got in the mail from them is packed with top brands like Eclipse, Ascend, and other brands no one has ever heard of before. The camp stoves they have advertised (they used to carry Coleman, these are so cheap they won't even say who makes them) aren't even really advertised. The page says you have to go to the website to learn about them. I was on their web site a few weeks back, it's got less information than the catalog!

Just made a road trip to Washington State, went to various stores of theirs from N. Dakota to Washington looking for ammo, powder, etc. No luck, bought nothing else, not impressed. Went to a dandy Sportmans warehouse in Missoula, nothing either.

bAsspro has ruined Cabela's, for me at least.

They used to have a better reloading section than Bass Pro- but not since the buy out.

Yep, way overpriced since Bass Blo bought them out. I consider them in the same category as the well named Dicks Sporting goods.

They definitely went down hill after bass pro bought them. Gun library had some nice stuff but now it is gone and almost all the products mirror Bass Pro now. Johnny Morris also owns several of the boat brands now, Tracker, Nitro, Ranger, Triton, Pro Craft. Stratos. He discontinued Pro Craft and Stratos and discontinued the aluminum Triton this year. He has taken some production away from the Ranger and Triton factories and moved and outsourced it. He will ruin these premium boat brands as he has ruined Cabelas all for another dollar. Like he needs another dollar. Check his worth.

About 10 years ago bought several thru Gun Library. One pre-64 Mod 70 Win had missing parts and safety would not work. Cabelas paid for parts and repair.-----------------Ray

Cabela"s quality went down prices went up. I have been wearing Cabela's shorts for 20 -30 years, they used to last a long time. Now they don't hold up, and they made the zipper shorter, to save a couple pennies. Looking for a different make now. Sure didn't take Bass Pro to wreck a great company.

The only thing about Cabela's I keep is their Cabela's Club credit card.

After the new owners took over the place they quit shipping black powder pistols to customers and made you have to pick them up in their stores. The nearest store to me is 185 miles one way!

I still get points for using their card but on the low end percentage for not using it for buying their stuff. They have nothing of interest to me for the prices they are asking.

When in Colorado I was in easy daytrip distance of the old store, at that time the only one. Back then, the " bargain cave" actually had bargains. Sad to see what happened to it.

As a kid, lived close enough to the original Herters store to get there on occasion. Sad to see the demise of "the world's greatest" everything.

I knew when they were bought out things would go down hill. Several things I bought through Cabela's are gone or of less quality. I started looking for other vendors. We have a local Bass Pro and a local Cabela's, they're the same. I stop in and pick up a few things now and then because it's convenient. There's not many small shops around here anymore.

I still have a few of the old Herters catalogues around here. George Leonard Herter sure wasn't shy about touting the quality of his products. I bought a lot of his hunting and fishing stuff back in the day and some was good and some you got what you paid for. There are still a few rifles around here with Herters wood and some fishing rods and tackle. That was another let down when Cabelas bought them and for the most part killed the brand. Bob

Bargain Cave and the shooting gallery (for the young ones!) used to get me in the door. Kids have grown and the Cave has no bargains. The result...I drive right by every time, but not without a touch of nostalgia.

  • Don McManusDon McManus Member Posts: 23,695 ✭✭✭✭

I like the nostalgia thinking, scooterdriver.

Picked up a couple of early 1900s 1895 Winchesters in 30 Govt. (30-40), including an excellent take-down model.

Also, walked in one day and a Boys rifle chambered in .50 BMG was sitting on the table begging for me to take it home.

A couple of nice vintage side by side shotguns, a couple of 1917's. and a 1903-A4 that was in beautiful condition.

Those days appear to be over now, but I was the adult version of a kid in a candy shop for a good number of years.

I shopped at Cabela's and had a Cabela's card because I liked shopping there.

If I wanted to shop Bass Pro, I would of.

The quality and selection there is just terrible now.

I now have a Scheels card since we now have one an hour away.

I keep my Cabela's card as a back up. After the card was taken over by I believe BOA, I'm totally not interested in it.

My goal with my Scheels card it to get enough points to walk out with a Ruger Wrangler using just my points.

We have one of their smaller outpost shops here in Yakima, WA. Quality of many things, especially the clothing, has gone down since Bass Pro bought them out. The only time I even go in anymore is if I get a gift card. Their ammo selection was going downhill before the pandemic and election stuff ever happened. At the moment they only have shotgun shells and some unpopular(by today’s standards) rifle rounds.

I lived 60 miles from Sidney when Cabela's was in the "John Deere" warehouse. A friend of mine ran the "Bargain Cave" down stairs in the basement. Saying it's not the same doesn't begin to describe it now.

  • NeoBlackdogNeoBlackdog Member Posts: 17,288 ✭✭✭✭

I had $250 worth of gift cards given to me recently and went into one of the 'outpost' stores. Everything felt cheap and way over priced. The bargain cave was nowhere to be found. I did pick up a pound of Titegroup for $24.99, which seemed pretty reasonable. Everyone working there was pretty nice except for one jack wagon behind the gun counter. He had issues and is part of the reason that I'll not go there again unless it's to use up a gift card.

I was happy when they finally built one in Utah, even if it was 1.5 hours away. Then they built a second one only 30 miles down the road and I was ecstatic. They had everything - until BP bought them out. I still shop there once in a while, mostly because I get a "double dip" discount with both my Tracker owner card and Military ID.

Sadly, I understand that BP now also bought Sportsman's Warehouse, which was my closest and best option. We also have the flagship Scheel's store, but it's almost as far as the original Cabela's. I hardly ever get down that far. When I need fishing tackle, I'm as likely to order it online now.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

BP bought SW? Well crap. That used to be a good store.

If Bass Pro has purchased sportsman this is bad news. Johnny Morris has too much control over things now. Sportsman will be selling all Red head items now. A monopoly is not a good thing. I want variety in shopping for what i need.

Did anyone ever like Bass Pro? I once heard that they were THE place for fishing gear but had never been to one. I don't fish much so that aspect never appealed to me. How is Bass Pro taking over the sporting goods world with such crappy offerings?

I went to a Bass Pro store in Mackinaw City a few years before they acquired Cabela's. It looked like a Cabela's Wanabe without the quality nor the inventory.

  • BobJudyBobJudy Member Posts: 6,674 ✭✭✭✭

The store in Mackinaw was/is not owned by bass pro. They had an exclusive ( at least 10 years ago ) to be a BassPro dealer. I think it was an experiment that Johnny did before he could afford to build all his own stores. The BassPro that opened some years later in Detroit was #6 that was opened in the country. It made the Mackinac store look like a cheap little hole in the wall. I haven't been in the real BassPro in about 9 years so I don't know what it is like now. Before I stopped going I did buy about a dozen or so new guns there at pretty darn good prices but you had to know when to buy, fall hunting sale, Christmas, end of the year closeout, etc... When they opened the first Cabelas in Michigan, it was a big disappointment. The Cabelas in Mitchell S.D. was one of my favorites but the one in MI sucked. Bob

Research " The Death of Sidney, Nebraska " by Tucker Carlson .

    Sickening to be sure.

I don't remember if Johhny Morris is even mentioned.
