Grits are emphatically NOT a hot cereal like cream of wheat. They are a potato substitute and should never be ruined with sugar, syrup, or similar "oatmealy" things. S&P certainly; butter/cheese without question; hot sauce if you are inclined.
If you've been eating grits as if they were Cream of Wheat, please repent and reform. NOW.

I was in the Corp's, 88' to 93'. 3 years in Camp Lejeune NC.
Never have eaten, or actually laid eyes on a grit, except on the television...

They must not serve it to navy belhops.
I was in 25 years 81-06. I have been all over the world on every kind of base and most all served grits. Same with SOS. Ya'll must not have known what they looked liked.
Army 76-80 they had cream o wheat, oatmeal and lots of SOS but never any grits and I was based in several southern states along with Kansas, California and Germany... And believe me as hungry as we were in basic I would've eaten anything they gave us... but not a fan of grits at all.
Here in the north country we ate CORN MEAL MUSH way back when. It is one of those dishes many today have never heard of. I would eat it, but I didn't have to like it. We were made to eat stuff or went without.
Have never tried it with anything sweet. Always ways ways was Butter and Pepper.
Might have to see how that goes with some Sorghum or Honey.
Yep...that was staple when I was growing up...Mom would make a BIG pot...(there were 10 kids)...She took the leftovers and we would have fried mush with syrup and bacon...Pretty tasty!!!

Fried mush and Italian polenta are certainly related to grits, but aren't really the same.
