CONNECTICUT - The maker of the rifle used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting has offered some of the victims' families nearly $33 million to settle their lawsuit over how the company marketed the firearm to the public.
Lawyers for now-bankrupt Remington filed the offers late Tuesday in Waterbury Superior Court in Connecticut. The nine families suing the company, who are being offered nearly $3.7 million apiece, are considering the proposals, their lawyers said.
A Hartford lawyer representing Remington, James Rotondo, declined to comment Wednesday.
A Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle made by Remington was used to kill 20 first graders and six educators at the Newtown, Connecticut, school on Dec. 14, 2012. The 20-year-old gunman, Adam Lanza, killed his mother at their Newtown home before the massacre, then killed himself with a handgun as police arrived at the school.
Relatives of nine victims killed in the shooting say in their lawsuit that Remington should have never sold such a dangerous weapon to the public and allege it targeted younger, at-risk males in marketing and product placement in violent video games. They say their focus is on preventing future mass shootings.
One of the plaintiffs, Nicole Hockley, whose 6-year-old son Dylan died in the shooting, said Wednesday that the families need to talk with their lawyers about the settlement offers and declined further comment.
FBI's Sandy Hook documents
The FBI released more than 1,500 pages of documents related to its investigation of the massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. The documents include statements from people who agents interviewed. Many of the people spoke about Adam Lanza's growing isolation before he killed 20 first-graders and several adults, including his mother.
Joshua Koskoff, an attorney for the families, said the settlements were offered by two of Remington's insurers.
"Ironshore and James River ... deserve credit for now realizing that promoting the use of AR-15s as weapons of war to civilians is indefensible. Insuring this kind of conduct is an unprofitable and untenable business model," Koskoff said in a statement.
Remington's lawyers have denied the lawsuit's allegations.
Remington, based in Madison, North Carolina, filed for bankruptcy last year for the second time in two years. Its assets were later sold off to several companies.

I thought that the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act" protects manufacturers against this sort of suit, with only a few possible exceptions.
Remington is bankrupt, there is no money left. (Same thing for the previous version of General Motors, so we need to know when the newly purchased Corvette was made.)
You can fight off a lot of phony lawsuits for $33M. Could there be a wealthy Marxist backing the insurance companies, hoping to overturn the current law?

Yes Remington is Gone Current Owners of the NamAre in Name only and not liable for previous acts.
Settlements were offered by two of Remington's insurers. ??
This is a very bad precedent. Hit in the head with an ax, sue the ax company. Absolutely ridiculous.
^^^^^^^ This
Uh ohhhhhhhhhh. Land Rover is next.
No wonder they went out of business. RIP big green. Destroyed by greedy management and the spiral began after they ignored the 700 trigger issue.
I do not see this as Remington- or any other gun maker- agreeing to pay. I see this as a decision by their INSURANCE COMPANIES. Whether you agree with what your insurance company is doing does not matter. Your insurance policy gives them the right to defend or settle a claim. Do I agree with it? Hell no. But it is their money and their choice.
Just another way to take away the firearms..
BS if they start that gun company's will go under in no time , which is the lefts plan
so if gun manufacture's are held libel then every company in the USA should also be held to the same standards is a blank check for the ambulance chasers cell phone company's , beer company's would be a huge windfall as all the car company's why the law was made to start with no one can control what the end user does
just opening the door as I see it to a huge flood of lawsuits
speaking of I did see some POSA California judge just ruled the gun company could be sued over the shooting that happened there as the company and dealer knowing they sold a rife that could be converted to a full auto and also to a person by law did not have the correct paper work (I guess Kal laws he did not have a hunting licenses at the time of the sale ) he had in process but a month before he go it back the gun shop sold him the rifle
And half will go to the Lawyers....😠
Close but its more than 50%. Ever wonder why we cant pass tort reform, but we can pass thousands of liability and tax laws: Its because a huge majority of congressmen are lawyers. We need to quit electing them.
Every year, drunk drivers cause a comparable number of deaths per those murdered by firearm.
Have Budweiser or Jack Daniel been sued?
How can this lawsuit have any standing? Remington sold a legal rifle.
This is very bad news for us. If this goes through, the libs can sue every gun maker out of existence. They can't toss out the Second Amendment but this is how they will destroy the right to keep and bear arms.
Because a POS Oblama judge ruled it didn't violate the rules.
And some POS insurance company wants to settle...
Ironshore, which is a specialty branch of Liberty Mutual, and James River, which is a specialty liability company.
Yep....I worked in and around the County Judicial Center for over 30 years.....used to see cases settled all the time where the lawyers got 40-50% depending on "expenses"...sometimes more. SAD this can go on.
The precedent is now set to sue auto manufacturers at least. "Did you see that they market cars to people?!! The audacity!"
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Ya! And if you sprayed your weeds with Roundup and came down with cancer, there are scores of law firms that want to hear from you!
I need to take a Zantac just to settle my stomach with all of this legal BS!
I used Roundup and got prostate cancer. WHERE IS MY MONEY?!?!
jimdeere I think you may have sprayed the wrong place...LOL!🤣
Hmm..that explains a lot.🤣
What do you call a dozen lawyers at the bottom of a lake ?
A good start !
TEN THOUSAND would be much better😙
This is a bunch of BS. What about mom that b ought the rifle and gave it to her wacko son?
I believe the shooter killed her before he left for the school.......
At the time, there was some evidence that the shooter tortured his mother, forcing her to unlock the gun safe. When she did, he shot her 4 times in the head, took the guns and the rest is sad history. The death toll is usually listed as 26 victims. This number excludes the murderer, as was common at the time. But in a different twist, the media largely ignored the mother's death, portraying her more as a "co-perpetrator" than as a victim.
