Not sure about now, but 15 years ago when Judy retired USPS hiring was done on a point system. Being a vet got you a lot of points and a disabled vet went to the head of the line. Unfortunately some with PTSD as their disability caused quite a few problems in that working environment. Bob

They have historically given preference to veterans. 10 points on the test and then general hiring preference after that. Someone asked me once why there weren't more veterans working in my office. I didn't have a good answer. I told the guy maybe they can find a better job more easily.

A couple friends of mine say they've experienced a huge uptick in mailed packages arriving having been tampered with or just torn open. Much of the time the contents are missing. I personally lost an expensive watch I mailed to a watchsmith in the south for repairs. He received a flat-rate box torn open on one side. Apparently the old hands aren't coming back to the job quick enough so they're hiring people, giving them quick training and setting them loose handling packages. They learned quickly that there's money to be made tearing open small, heavy boxes.

I'd love to see some Vets get hired there. It sure seems they'd have higher character than the ones they have working today.

Vets were given extra points 60+ years ago too.

It's too late for me, save yourself.

Used to be 5 points added to your CS exam score for veteran and 10 points if disabled veteran. I got beat out on my first CS exam by an Air Force vet who cadged a disability from flat feet. I scored 100 on my CS exam but he got a 95 and they still added the 10 points. I bit my tongue and walked away. He failed miserably as a USPS employee and I was hired less than a year later.

We should be disbanding the post office, not adding 100,000 heads.

Back in the early 80's I tried to get on with the post office .Turned out to be impossible . My father in law at the time was a postman . Even with his help I was never able to overcome the veterans preference and the old boy network favoring retired military. My score was a solid 97 .when i finally did get an offer it was a substitute as needed on call driver for an office 2 hours drive away .No guarantees on number of hours month.

Some of the young guys around here trying to get a job at the fire department would get their panties in a wad when guys fresh out of the Navy would be hired instead of them. Veterans preference and the fire fighting training those fleet sailors had made them top choice for the job.

Not been my experience at all.

    Combat vet, high score.

    Couldn't get hired in the '90's because I wasn't a woman or a minority.

Passed the test in the 70's and was hired. As the years passed I kept seeing more and more Vietnam refugees working there. They didn't hardly speak any English, wondered how they got the job without taking the same test I did? When I asked them about it, they said.....no test.

    Hmmmm
