How to de-militarize equipment?

News reported that equipment left in Kabul was "de-militarized" What would they do to make it unusable? Drain all liquids from a motor and fire it up till it quit? Pour oil in the fuel? Cut hoses, tires and belts? Puncture any radiators?

I hope it was
They probably just removed the part where it said US Army.

The equipment was left for the Afgan National Army for them to have a standing and turn key defensive force.
If the Taliban has acquired control of AFN assets, they have functional arms.
Usually the best way to de-militarize something is to send in the army. When I was in the army we were real good a breaking things. But when your in a head long retreat as we were, you rely on your enemy to break it for you. LOL.
All TMs (Technical Manuals) for every piece of equipment I ever operated while I was in the Army had a chapter (usually toward the rear of the book) that explained the specific and detailed method of destroying the equipment to prevent functional pieces from falling into enemy hands. The procedure normally involved thermite grenades or C-4. If "falling into enemy hands" was imminent, specific parts were removed and destroyed or hidden (think throwing them into a body of water). The same part was removed from each piece of equipment in order to prevent cannibalizing parts from other equipment in order to get at least one piece functional. Throw away or destroy (bend / break) all of the firing pins so there are no firing pins available to make at least one howitzer functional. Naturally, howitzer ammunition was much easier to destroy. 😉
Demilitarization of equipment prior to disposal is different as there is usually more time available. Think torch cutting barrels into multiple pieces.
They simply painted over the USA symbols. If ANYONE believes that the equipment was rendered useless, then i dont know what to tell you. They left it on purpose for the Afghan army. Why would they destroy it to leave it for the afghan army? This is the latest MEDIA SPIN! That black hawk being taxied down the runway by the taliban did not look useless to me!
Simply a word game to confuse the simple minded into thinking all is safe! SMDH
Take out the software controlling everything...........all of the "top secret stuff".........and set of a thermite grenade on top of the engine and/or other critical parts.
Pole............
Who actually BELEIVES that we demilitarized the equipment????????!!!!
Yes, we probably removed classified data from some things, just like we do for all our foreign military equipment. That does NOT make it unusable however!!!!!
We probably destroyed a very FEW items at the airport on our way out. That is a drop in the ocean compared to the BILLIONS we left before we took to the airport!!!!!!!!!!
You have to remember, there was only a thimble full of stuff left at the airport. Everything else was scattered all over the country. No, a lot was not destroyed. Hell we weren’t even going out of the airport to get are own people, the generals were told to stand down.
I am thinking a liberal dose of F18 Hornets could get er done.
GPS Locator ore on on all Heavy equipment. Require by DOD. Just let some Predator drones over head and let go.
The vast majority of the equipment we left was in the hands of the Afghan military and is not fully functional in the hands of the Taliban. The news reports were of the equipment at the Kabul airport, which was very little.

I hope the GPS is still active in the equipment so they could be tracked.
They should have left listening devices at the base and some of the equipment also.
Please explain why the taliban cannot operate the equipment! They are crazy, but not dumb, well maybe dumb too but they can figure it out!
...There is no end to the lies these spineless idiots will tell in attempt to try and CYA, especially that senile moron residing in the White House...videos of these rag-heads driving every type of vehicle we left behind, flying a Blackhawk around, etc. etc...Mike55 was right, we probably painted over the "US" insignias, and let the air out of the tires...that, will sure slow 'em down...
...Sad to say the civilized world will suffer in the years to come for the ignorance of these bumbling fools...
At least we should have tipped 100lbs of sugar into each of the fuel storage tanks.
Since we left all that gear with the Afghan Army they just took it with them when they (re)joined the Talban.
Some * hat general was quite pleased when he said he rendered "useless" 27 vehicles. OK, what about he other 10s of thousands?
What would they do to make it unusable? " .................ONE THERMITE GRENADE
Nuke it from space. It’s the only way to be sure.
Just a few days ago Biden bragged how the Taliban could never take over after the US left because the Afgan military is one of the best equipped in the world. Equipped by the US. So the Taliban immediately takes over before Biden's Bunch even left town. So who do you think has all that functioning equipment now? Huh?
My guess BS put out as a feel good play down what they did
should have exploded every one in place or better put a 24 time delay timer with enough explosive ( well hidden ) to take out any thing with in 50 feet of it
If we’d gotten all of our people out, we could turn anything still in a depot or armory to dust right now. But with hundreds of Americans still there, all we can do is shake our heads.
Eventually the high tech stuff will probably fall into disrepair and be useless, but with some maintenance, all of the small arms (think including .50 BMGs) could last a hundred years or more.
"Eventually the high tech stuff will probably fall into disrepair and be useless,"
ANOTHER talking point from the talking heads. Do you think that China wont help them to fix anything that fails?! PLUS we left them MILLIONS in US cash. They can buy and replace needed parts, or pay someone to repair them.
I hate talking points! Esp when they make no sense when you use logic!
If you give it to civilians it is no longer militarty equipment, it is just military style...........
