A 12-ton statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that sits on the historic Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, is set to be taken down Wednesday, state officials said Monday.
Gov. Ralph Northam announced his intention to remove the Confederate statue, which is the largest remaining in the US, in June 2020, amid nationwide protests for racial justice.
I remember in US history books idolizing this great Confederate general, so I guess from now on history will be rewritten. It would not surprise me if the battlefields are plowed up an put in corn and the museums closed.

I don't feel anything for General Lee, but that statue is a historic monument ---- for better or worse. I can only hope that they erect a Chick-Fil-A on that spot.
Next thing to do: Change the name of Arlington National Cemetery to Northam National Cemetery, in honor of Virginia's great governor. (Green print)

😡........😠.......🤬. Read my signature line and you'll see where R.E Lee stands with me.
"Never do wrong to make a friend----or to keep one".....Robert E. Lee
LOL Democrats cheer as a monument to a Democratic Party president comes down. Oh the irony. You could press a thousand shirts!
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
As people move and change the tone of a state's population, the history of that state becomes less important than what is perceived to be the correct history of the United States.
Robert E. Lee was a very principled man who abhorred the idea of the break up of the US, but due to his allegiance to his state of birth was compelled by his moral code to come to her aid. The current popular view is that all who fought for the Confederacy were evil people with the sole intent to keep the black man enslaved for as long as possible. Any reading of what Mr. Lee thought and expressed reveals this is not the case. He is an important part of American history, and an important part of the history of Virginia.
To toss this history aside is the continuation of the goal of the 17th Amendment which was to erase the importance of the individual states and to put the power that the states once had into the hands of the political parties. It is part of the 100 year battle of those that believe they know best to exercise their will over those they view as less.

Governor Ralph Blackface Northam is doing everything he can to absolve himself of his racist past. Virginia Governors are limited to one term.
This makes me want to puke:

Communism and Socialism has FAILED miserably every time it has been implemented:
Northams legacy will be remembered and his legacy will be abhorred and vilified someday. Hope I am alive to see it.
i went to Highland Park Elementary and Northside Junior High School right around the corner practically from Monument Ave.
Ask my History teachers and the students I went to school with if that statue is a part of Virginia and US History. Read Don's post carefully. He is spot on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For God's sake General Lee was not a EVIL man. He was a West Pointer who believed in Duty, Honor, Country but his heart was in Virginia. He was offered command of the Northern Army and turned it down.
I find it disgusting and makes me want to puke that General Lee's statue is being removed.
Hopefully the POS Governor Blackface sooner than later will cross the line and meet the same fate as King Cuomo. -------------------------------------------Ray

Keep poking the bear.
Well, Monument Avenue, which was in the Guinness Book Records as the longest straight street in the world- now has ONE monument- Arthur Ashe. So- when are they going to rename the street?
Here it is coming down at the 59 minute mark to be cut into three pieces.

🤣😋😆
Bring to my house I would proudly display it
And defend against any trespasser
Apparently the statues greatest trespassers were pigeons. Described as "covered in poop" ! 😆
That is great, now everything is all better. What its not? Damn
If the problems of racism and poverty in the black communities are ever going to be addressed they will be addressed by Blacks. Not with hand outs or coddling and excuse making.
If the communities that have so many issues would spend time addressing the failures of the family and morals like they do protesting everything else they would have a great start.
No more glorification of Baby daddies.
I sadly think much sooner.
😉😉
I just checked and he's still on the wall in my dining room:
I counted and was surprised that I have 15 prints with Robert E. Lee on various walls around the house. General Jackson appears with Lee in several of them.
I agree. The only thing they forgot were coupons for Popeye's Chicken. 😡
My great-grandfather fought in the 14th NY Heavy Artillery and the 97th NY Infantry but I have always respected General Lee. He was a man of principle and leadership and tearing down these statues absolutely disgusts me. Union or Confederate, they were all AMERICANS and deserve to be remembered whether or not we agree with their beliefs.
I watched the destruction of Lee's monument surrounded by BLM shouting "We got our city back!". Yeah, it's "their" city and Northam is their pandering puppet. I hope to hell these liberals get run out of town and Virginia turns red again.😡
You can't change History. You might like it or dislike it, but again, you can't change it. All those now that are complaining about what happened 10, 50 ,100 ,200 years ago are making history. Years from now there will be people looking back at what is happening now and be some will be glad. Some will be sad. We can keep our History in our minds, no one can stop us from remembering these things. What a mess we Americans are in right now.
As the old saw goes ,those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it . Historical figures and their behaviors have to viewed from a lens of the times .We cannot hold them to the standards of our current times .
To do so is to be guilty of condemning them unfairly . Erasing them from history foregoes the opportunity to learn and profit from their mistakes and miscues . Sadly this is a perspective the "woke" mob is utterly incapable of comprehending .
What is ironic is that RE Lee gave up his military career and his fortune (which was considerable) for the love of Virginia, which now disowns him. Had he only known.
I had ancestors who fought for the North, but I have always had a great respect for Gen. Lee. I think allowing the South to honor their heroes helped the healing process immensely. They were good men, after all.
I am going to look for a picture of the General to hang on my wall.
