Finally got my drivers license
renewed.
First attempt I didn't have enough documentation! I had my Birth certificate, pass port, several bills from utilities showing address and name, of course Drivers license and CWP card, also DD 214 and Military ID as VA card but I didn't have my original social security card, I did have the ORIGINAL backing the card came on which showed ssn and name also. But the Beach was hard core and said I had to have the original SS card.I told her it was ruined a zillion years ago swimming and never got another card since I new the number. NO need Original card. I mumbled some nasty things and said they had no problem believing I was me when it came to paying taxes and left.
The kicker is when I went on line at Social Security to get a replacement social security card they sort of try to talk you out of it saying you don't need one. LOL I guess they are not aware of South Carolina.
Anyway I got the SS card and went today to try again.
Lets not even get into the fact that if you can't handle the volume due to Covid close and give everyone a pass until you can! ARRGH
But I digress, after waiting 20 minutes in line to get a number to wait some more, I waited another 30 minutes to get called up. This girl says I don't need the original SS card since I have Passport, CWP, bills, VA, etc, etc,!
(I thought that rotten Beach was wrong but they hold all the cards. )
OK now pay 25 to go wait until we call you for a picture. waited 15 more minutes for pic, then 15 more to get printed. Wow thank GOD I don't have to do this again for 8 years and quite likely may not have to ever do it again.
Governments suck

I did mine online, good for 8 years! Don
Yeah, but they’re scared of you.
You must have gotten the Real ID drivers license. Seeing that we have passports, if we want to fly I just use them.
I have heard from others in our state of the frustration in getting the Real ID drivers license.
Sounds just like CT , should have told her you were illegal and got a free one, no waiting
And you may remember back in the day they said your SS number would never be used for identification.

It's easy here in Texas.........if I remember........just two forms of valid ID.
Be careful with that SS card.............I believe that the Social Security Administration limits replacement cards to 7 in a life-time.
took my mother in to get hers when she was 92, she had let it expire, they wouldn't renew it without all the BS you said mogley, only thing was she didn't have a birth certificate, back in 1920 they issued a cerificat of live birth if you were born at home instead of hospital or doctors office, which the DMV claimed wasn't good enough, and they would need statement from at least 2 people who witnessed the birth!!!!!!! long story short I know the frustration you went through mogley.......
My new tax preparer last year required original ss cards of my wife and myself before they would complete our taxes. I scrambled for several weeks looking through old boxes and finally found the wife's. Mine was forgotten in the gun safe but found during a total clean out.
Upon presentation of said cards the preparer asked me what those numbers written in ink on the back of my card were about. I told her they were the combination numbers to my Jr. High School locker. 🙄
Went thru the same thing with the ss backing card in Va. However, the supervisor told the clerk to accept it.
@mogley98 maybe you didn't have enough southern drawl for her.
@hillbille Same thing with my 96 YO aunt being born at home. But she was using a tobacco stick for a cane +++++
I had mine laminated way back when laminating first came out. Then I noticed somewhere that it said card not to be laminated!!😮
Ha! Ha! I did the same thing about 45 years ago. I guess it is to late to do anything about it now.
Last year Michigan had the moratorium on licenses expiring due to the pandemic. When the offices finally opened back up it was by appointment only. Since I was 4 months past due I made an appointment and then went to get a new drivers license. Naturally they were running behind and after my 30 min wait I finally got to the counter. Did my vision test, got all my documentation o.k.ed and just as the clerk started to enter everything in her computer the system crashed. After nobody could get the computers up and running, I was told to go home and make another appointment and start over. I explained to the manager that wasn't going to happen and I would be happy to camp out in his lobby for as long as it takes because I wasn't going to waste another day trying to do the right thing. He made copies of everything and told me to come back the next day and ask for him and he would have me in and out in 10 minutes. He was true to his word, I had to make an extra trip to town but I think he had me done in less than the 10 minutes Even with 4 minutes or so waiting for the camera to be free. Bob
Pretty fast for SC
Same here.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Here in SC you can only renew once every eight on line and this time I had to go in regrettably.
Like the banks I rather prefer dealing with machines sometimes.
I had to go through that when I renewed my driver's license a couple of years ago. Even though I have had a driver's license from the very same office for 40 years, I had to produce two Forms of ID, both of which I had obtained using my old license. It seemed like the Real ID is no more real than the old ID.
20 years ago a friend called me to help her renew her license. She had been living with another of my friends (now deceased) for many years. Of course, she's had a DL using his sir name for many years, by simply telling DMV she was married to him. The clerk was lost & called her supervisor. The supervisor delayed going to lunch so she could correct a previous oops.
A co-worker found out that after 16 years, he wasn't legally married. Turns out, the church never sent the paperwork to the state. She had to get all new ID including a DL in her maiden name. He had his chance, but he married her again.
AND now you can MAIL IN you BALLOT for POTUS :) So
My dad had an SS card made out of aluminum. Don't know how that worked. I've never seen another.
My work takes out city tax, but since I don't actually work in the city limits, I get a partial refund.
The first year, I had to show two forms of ID. They would only accept a water bill (I have a well), or a land line phone (don't have), and maybe a couple other options I didn't have. They wouldn't take my W2 or electric bill. I don't think my driver's license was even an option. It was crazy.
What they would accept was a copy of employee address from my employer's website. So I searched around & found it. Printed it. I literally could have typed out my address and printed that. That's all it was on the paper. Stupid government agencies.
I have one made out of aluminum. I bought it at a booth in the mall. Don
