Offshore fishing!

Went offshore fishing this weekend. 90 miles out from Naples, a charity fishing tournament.

The Tournament was for Yellowtail and Mangrove snapper, we caught a bunch of Yellowtail, AmberJack, and some blue fish. I fought one big Cobia and blew it when he was right next to the boat!

We were on a 39 foot YellowFin Center Console. It had FOUR, 400HP Mercury outboards and we hit 70mph running wide open.

Really fun weekend.

Might need some rentals and charters to do more of this.

Did alot of that off of Boca many years ago. Caught ballyhoo for bait and went after primarily dolphin. Was only a 40 minute ride out to the golf stream. Really great eating.

Bucket list question -- I'm mentioned it could be fun to go out like that and catch some "real fish" (as opposed to dragging catfish out of a mud pond) but LOML says she's heard seasickness is a real problem on those smaller boats.

    What's your experience?

I've never caught a fish on shore. Of course it's a little hard to cast 90 miles.

dang each of those engines is running about 34 gal /hr. thats a lot of fuel to catch a fish.

WT, people who are susceptible to seasickness will get seasick, and those who aren't won't. There are several OTC medicines and patches for those who aren't sure either way. I've never been seasick, but I've been out with people who hardly got out of the harbor before they were "chumming with breakfast".

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

Time to buy your plane tickets folks, the Cohos are heading into Prince William Sound and they'll peak the 3rd week of October. Sit off the south end of Esther Island and just float with the tide, it's DEEP there and the water moves slow. You'll be surrounded by tens of thousands of salmon jumping, close your eyes and cast a line, chances are you'll hit a fish with your lure.

I love that sort of trip, but haven't done it in ages. Hope we both get to do it again soon!

The beauty of it is, here in Alaska it's so accessible. Fly to Anchorage, get on the train at the airport. Take the train to Whittier, walk to the boat, go fishin.

Come back from fishin, take 30 or 40 Advil and cry because your arms hurt so bad, get on the train, ride back to Anchorage, take a Lyft to your Hotel down at Ship Creek (a mile).

Next day take 30 more Advil and walk down to the creek from your hotel (1/4 mile) and fish for King salmon in downtown Anchorage. Stagger back to your hotel and sleep.

Seasickness. We went on Lake Erie with a guide for walleye. We all did the patch behind the ear. We told our guide. He was glad. He told us about bachelor party groups all hungover and the mess that follows. The thing about the patches was, about an hour after we got back, we all felt stoned. Yeah. Stoned like that. A stupor. To me, it's still better than puking all over the place.
