BIG Critter in the Yard

It's bed time, dark out, so I took the dogs out on the back deck to let them down to do their business. Soon as they stepped out they hackled up, growled and started that rapid sniffing the air and exhaling through their mouths, tails rigid. They stayed close beside me, rigid, looking off in the dark. I listened for a minute and heard the same sound coming back ... rapid breathing in through the nose, exhale through the mouth, but it sounded like the mouth and throat were the size of wash tubs. There are some BIG lungs out there and they're smelling upwind.
I ran in and got the big flashlight, went back out and I can't see anything out there. I hear alders getting pushed around, and the odd branch breaking. And the fricken dogs won't go down to go potty.
Guess I don't blame them.

You need to March straight out there n leave some Nanuq urine scent on those broken branches. That's what I would do,,,,, maybe? I'm sure it's a great big critter deterrent though.
Are your pet bears denned up now or are they still out and about?

It just could be one of those pesky small critters making BIG noise in the dark! 🙂
Some evolved over a plethora of years learning how to cast a giant shadow along with a scary growl. Of coarse a Wolverine may be on the small side but I learned a long time ago to not get in their way!

Bear WERE denned up, we had 24" of snow and winter seemed to be here. Now we have a chinook going on and it's melted all the snow. So the bears are up again, probably cranky this time.
The ole boar bears around here might never truly hibernate, just den up in real cold freezing weather
