$895 to rent a box for 2 days

Henry0ReillyHenry0Reilly Member Posts: 10,893 ✭✭✭

My wife's oldest passed away. He is to be cremated but will be in a casket for the viewing.

I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

$895 to "view" in a casket.............separate from the cremation fee?

    That is robbery.

Do they plan on re-using it?

I actually saw something about an "environmental" burial where they put the body in a bag infused with mushroom spores. Natural decomposition.

Granddad used to say when he died, dress him in a tuxedo, fly over Mt McKinley and chuck him out into a crevasse.

Some time decades from now someone will find him and wonder what happened.

Sorry for your loss both of the oldest and the money.

Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

I had a relative pass away about 2 years ago.The funeral home picked up the body from the hospital and I went the next day to make the arrangements.I owed $5600.and all they had done was pick up the body. The deceased had made some pre plans and paid for the plot and opening and closing of the grave. When all was figured up the total was about $20,000.Even with what was pre paid we still paid another $10,000.

The total bill was almost $6,000, $895 was just to rent a casket.

Once they "habeas corpus" they have you in a box until they put you into a financial hole. All the while looking grave, as if they urn it.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

I want to either buried like a cabbage, or with my butt sticking out of the ground.

We attended a wine & cheese tasting where a local funeral home gave a spiel. A basic pre-paid cremation was $4000. When they called to follow up, I let them have my 3 cents. 1) Several other funeral homes were only $2400. 2) They have a sign on the highway in a lower socio economic area saying $1400 for a basic cremation. 3) We were ready to pre-pay for 4 people & the wine & cheese was not worth that much of an overrun. Funny, they were now speechless.

Henry- sorry for your family's loss, and the headaches that go with that.

With a funeral, you can spend as much or as little as you want. Last December my bride of 48 years passed away. She wanted a simple cremation, with her ashes scattered in a favorite place of ours. No services- our daughters were with her at the end, and would help in scattering their Mom's ashes. Local funeral home took care of picking up her body, filing paperwork required by the state, and the cremation. Our total was $1300. You could easily spend $30,000.

Many years ago my moms cremation was $348. Last year a friend passed and they put her in some sort of canvas bag, dropped it in a bare hole and let the worms have her. They called it a green burial.

Clint did say "Worms gotta eat too"

My wife, June, passed away in my arms on Thursday this week after losing her battle with cancer for the past year and a half. I followed the hurst/van to the crematory/funeral home and went in and made the arrangements to have her cremated as she requested that I do.

They charged $695 for the cremation. They said they would get the death certificates and the copies that I needed for $100 unless I wanted to do it myself which I don't.

I picked out a very nice marble urn and vault combination for her ashes. I was surprised the price was only $395 which includes engraving her name, date of birth and death date in the marble.

The total for everything including taxes, misc. fees, etc. was a little under $1,400.

I'll pick her ashes up sometime this week when they call and make arrangements to bury them in Knoxville, TN at the Cemetery near my Mom's home where my great grandpa purchased a large section of it back in the late 1800s for his future family members.

The last 2 years has been a nightmare.

my wife has thought long about it and decided to be cremated have her ashes ( decided for me mine also 😉 ) spread on back lot by all our old 4 legged buddies and have a simple marker with our names and dates on it placed there , she says at least some one will pass by us when mowing the grass 😁 I have seen 60 to 70 % American's are going with cremation any more .

Smitty, I'm sorry it's been so hard. You might considering keeping in close contact with hospice, they're not done until you don't need them anymore. Before it was June that needed them, now it's you. They can help you live again.

When my dad died he asked to be cremated and his ashes spread over his favorite spot in the Lower 48. Problem is, he lived here in Alaska for decades too, and had a favorite spot here.

I asked the funeral home to set aside a small amount of ashes in a little vial. I brought those home so I can take them to his favorite spot and spread them.

Prayers asked for all those who have lost loved ones, as cliche as it may sound I believe they are indeed in a better place. God Bless all of you who are hurting.

Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Prayers sent for you and June's family. I know you both suffered with her sickness, and I salute you for your steadfastness. God Bless
