Stopped by the BMW dealer to check out new bikes models and saw this beauty.
This is the 40th anniversary model of the GS and comes with a good sized price tag. $20k
This has ride by wire throttle with cruise control. Under 500 lbs and 108 hp with 85 ft lbs of torque.
100 of them sent to the USA.

This one has different ride modes that can be shifted on the fly. I guess dirt mode still has abs, but much more manageable, so I am guessing yes, they did a better job. Still would like a test drive. I offered to take it for a week, and if I didn't buy it, I'd give them a buck a mile I drove it.
It also has some traction and other controls, not sure exactly how good they would work. The wheelie control on my Z900rs works well. Kawasaki did a great job on that remake.
This BMW seat is pretty soft, which I like, but it is narrower than I would like which does make reaching the ground flat footed almost possible for me. It would take some time in the saddle to know how it would be after a long trip.
Sweet. There is a BMW dealership in Orlando, but I seldom venture up there do to the need to cross the Disney death zone. Disneyworld is a blight upon the land.
I have a 2018 Triumph Trophy that has a lot of the hoopla you refer to. I would never again buy a bike without ABS. This triumph also has the adjustable ride mode and power windshield. The worst part of the bike was the factory seat. A phone call to Corbin solved that problem.

In the meanwhile, I just finished cleaning and waxing the Z900rs Cafe. What an amazing bike. Other than the shaft drive and cruise, the BMW has nothing on the Z. But I do need a test drive to confirm.

While I like the BMW just fine and would have no issue with keeping both, I'm just having a bit of financial conscience on spending near $20K for a glorified RnineT that I can pic up for $10k with low miles. But the heart wants what the brain says no to.

You can always pass on the things you want and hoard the money till you die, then whoever inherits it will enjoy buying what they want. I made the decision a couple of months ago that I wanted a new Harley Davidson Ultra Limited CVO. $48,000.00, but what else am I going to do with the money, die and let someone else spend it?

I used to never think BMWs were fast until we raced them at the Isle of Man. Wow.
Nope, not going to. Time and research and no test drive. Went back today and just was not as tickled. That is why I always take a day for big purchases. It's just a glorified R nine T for $4,000 more. I test drove an R nine T a couple years back, and did not like the ride, so I can't imagine this would be any different being a fancy r9t without any suspension or driveline upgrades. Sure is purdy though.
It was fun while it lasted, on to the next best thing.
My first ride was a BMW. 1968 R60 that I bought from a retired master sergeant who couldn't ride it any longer. He'd sunk buckets of money into it before getting his back *'d railheading M60 tanks.

I never drove one, but the local non bmw dealer had a few, pricetag around $70,000 to $80,000 not street legal.

Not at the Isle of Man. Going up over the mountain there are long stretches where the throttle is pinned and you’re fighting for each additional mph. It’s at redline and perfectly balanced every last horsepower against wind resistance. She just ain’t got no more to give. Small eddies in the air will give you a few feet more distance between you and the guy you just passed, as you try to make yourself as small as possible. There, it’s cubic dollars that win races as every mph gained costs thousands to achieve.
Here's my buddy John doing a hot lap in the Senior race. Listen to the engine wavering at redline as he goes through bumps and breezes, pinned along the straights. He's using everything it's got to give. (warning, you won't be sleeping tonight after watching this, your heart might not slow down for days)
Just watched some of that video, man that kind of riding takes some concentration and giant balls of steel !
Speaking of BMW motorcycles, that is what I started out on and always had one or another in the garage and now I do not and I miss that.
Been considering ordering a new RT or K16 and been kicking that around, but the timing is just bad what with the issues with missing electronics due to supply issues. Navigation, radio, etc. Then the current "sellers market" pricing.
There is the issue of lack of BMW dealer representation. The dealer that I would be buying from is 300 miles away and the closest is over 150 miles. Real PIA if you need something or some electronic gizmo goes bad.
Its no BMW, but the new Honda Gold Wing Tour is looking better and better and may be the most practical way to go for me.
These days regardless of manufacturer, we are looking at $29,000. retail...BMW, Can-Am,Honda, Indian, HD, you name it the loaded touring bikes cost that much.
I like that. Is that the whole course? Almost 38 miles in 17 minutes.
I have only seen parts of the track, this would be the first I have seen the whole loop and I like it. Was he on one of them BMW's? The bike sounded smaller.
I started watching Moto GP more now, and I like that. I wouldn't mind running the course at half throttle just for fun. My chicken strip is almost an inch on the Z. Another 1,000 miles and I get new tires, which should be way better than the stockers. This is the challenge I have with the Cafe, keeping the speed down. At my age I do not need to be breaking bones.
Yes sir, that's one lap. Toward the end where he takes the right into the dark right-left turn, that's just outside Douglas and designed to slow you down as you come down Birch hill past the pits to the finish line. You can't see a thing in there and it's always dewy with leaves and stuff. Still John set the outright lap record that year at 132.071mph on his Honda Fireblade CBR1000RR. The next year Hutchy unofficially broke that record on a Tyco BMW S1000RR doing the course at 132.803mph... IN SUPERSPORT, not on the Superbike John used.
People idolize riders that go fast on secure closed racing circuits, at the IOM the announcers put out the word island-wide for everyone to get their livestock off the road, practice will commence in 15 minutes. Then these guys go out and blaze around the island, knees inches away from stone walls. It's the most brutal and dangerous race in the world, while I was there 6 people died during practice. John has won it 23 times, to me that makes him the best racer on the planet.
After practice that day I met him in the pits and he said "I quite fancy that shirt you're wearing" (I had on my Team T3 shirt) and I said, mocking his accent, "I quite fancy THAT shirt you're wearing". We both laughed and stripped off our shirts and swapped them right there. It's one of my most prized possessions.

Don't talk like that's a bad thing. On the road it just means you're being prudent. On a closed course you can melt your tires clear to the edge, still they're throwing off dime-sized pieces and you have no way of knowing.
Awesome video. Great respect for the people that can do that. Nerves of steel, instantaneous reaction time, and super concentration. None of which will ever apply to me as I once got my bike up to 88 mph keeping up with the traffic flow thru downtown Atlanta.
Those guys are nuts! How much practice do the get before the money run?
We have a week of practice, The drivers are refreshing their knowledge of the course and the mechanics are tweaking details to make the suspension and engines work better. Then it’s GO time.

Yep, the TT Zero racers. All electric.
My step uncle races bikes down in the salt flats. He uses a Hayabusa engine as his platform. The main issue he runs into is that no one makes a truly high speed motorcycle tire.
