i recently bought a house that needs a new roof. have been trying for a couple of weeks to find a roofer, not many around right now, suspect they may be over in louisiana making insurance money. i had a Mexican roofer say something to me i thought i would never ever hear "i can't find anybody to work". go figure.

Mine are right here...
Are there any Amish in your area?
There is an Amish crew replacing our roof at church this week....My bride and I are feeding them lunch tomorrow...
Too much work and not enough workers. Everyone is backed up for months.
Roofers are almost as crooked a bunch as you will find.
And you will know they will say stuff like.... there is a shingle shortage...Just like was told to me a few months back on a flip home. I kindly responded to take a ride to the warehouse...ABC... and I could get a whole truckload in a few minutes.
Probably like LOTS of others, they are getting paid NOT to work.
Same with most all tradesmen. Retired or became "americanized".
Seems like I read where the CIC and his clowns want to give more money to the unemployed folks.
SHEESE, go figure.
My roofer is from south of the border, he cannot get help of no kind and it is hard to roof as a one man band. By the way he is one of the best ever.
Rumor says the Christmas tree workers around here are holding out for 25.00 per hour, if true live cut tress will be expensive.
I hired a well known guy to do my roof last year. He showed up with trucks and a shaggy looking bunch of workers. I said something to him about the guys looks and he said back to me "bankers don't do roofing" The guys did a great job and were actually nice guys with old clothes on.
My neighbor works for a large cabinet maker. Said they hired a new guy for the warehouse but he was shocked that they expected him to actually "Move things!? Don't you have robots to do that??"
Checked his record a little deeper -- 14 jobs in 14 months🙄
I can't find anyone to help me clean up around new house and shop. Kid that has helped me now has job at McDonalds that needs him every hour he can spare from school.
Luckily the Hispanics are still working around here, although they are the only ones
All I know is that around here, every work crew will have an industrial-strength work radio - and it will be blasting mariachi music. Roofers, lawn guys, construction crews, highway workers - they're all working hell bent for leather with more jobs than they can handle. The best you can do is get an estimate and be put on a wait list. They'll get to you when supplies and labor allow. And you'l pay through the nose for it.
Utah has the lowest unemployment numbers in the country and there are Now Hiring signs on virtually every workplace from fast food to aerospace.
HEY! I was a roofer and I wasn't crooked.
Spend years walking and stooping on pitched roofs and you're gonna be crooked - no matter how honest you are.
Need one myself as we are trying to sell a house and the inspection said needs new roof even though no leaks... trying to get somebody to give me an estament is proving harder than I thought...
Can't even go to Lowes or Home Depot and find folks needing work anymore standing outside
We just had gutters replaced...Called about 12 outfits and only one answered...They got hired and did a great job and fast..."Gutters by Juan"...Paid them in cash but after they left they soon returned and handed me a $50.00 bill...I had over paid them...That really surprised me!!!

And yet I see still folks on street corners with a cardboard sign asking for "help". Interestingly, there is often a business at that intersection with a "Help Wanted" sign in the window. Incentives are clearly misaligned.
Boy Oakie you really nailed timber buyers. Between them and the loggers you won't even get a "reach- a- round".
more to add. found out i need a permit to repair my roof so i went to city hall and applied, said they would call when it was ready. then my friend called and said i can have a crew there in the morning, do i have your permission to have the shingles delivered. if not tomorrow, it may be two months to get it done. my insurance has given me thirty days to replace the roof or no insurance. i guess this is a case of asking forgiveness rather than permission with city hall.
We now hire H2A workers from South Africa. Don
A permit to repair a roof. That is insane. I, too, would leave Big Brother out of this one.
Tell me about it.
Worked on a house in a near by town. Building inspector was way over the top. Neighbor was repairing a couple steps going up to his deck. Inspector sees him and asks to see his permit. Reply, "my steps, my house don't need a permit"
Within minutes the police were talking to him pretty clearly explaining he best get the permit.
Some years ago a few of us roofed my sister's house without any permits. Shingles delivered on Friday, work done by Sunday evening.
I called a guy 3 weeks ago on a repair. It took him a week to get here, he said he'd be back in 4 days, that's the last I heard of him, but at least he found the issue. I may try to find a tall ladder and fix it myself.
I had a metal roof put on a couple of years ago.The owner of the company showed up at first light.I ask where his helper was and he said there were nobody that would work,so he did the whole job alone. He finished about dark.I I stayed pretty close around, just in case he needed help.
Just had my roof replaced . Guys showed up on time ,did a great job and were reasonable on price . 25 years ago ,pre arthritis i would have gathered up a few guys and done it myself .
