"Like a dark evil cloud,
Twelve-hundred came down, on him and 29 more.
They fought for their lives, but most of them died,
In the 173rd Airborne.
On the 8th of November, the angels were crying,
As they carried his brothers away.
With the fire raining down, and the hell all around,
There were few men left standing that day.
1965 …. The 8th of November"

After watching Vietnam all through high school and 4 years of ROTC I was commissioned a month after they quit sending men to VN. I served in a staff position with a Captain who lost an arm and most of his leg in a battle but managed to stay on active duty.
One day we were talking and I mentioned something about wondering how I would have handled combat.
He looked straight at me and said, "It's not worth knowing."
This from a man who received the Silver Star for continuing to lead his platoon in the battle despite his wounds.
To me that comment summarized the contradictions of our involvement in Vietnam.
