ROOMBA?

sxsnufsxsnuf Member Posts: 2,952 ✭✭✭✭

Recently installed vinyl plank flooring in living/dining/family room/hallway. Kitchen will be next, after cabinet demo. It's not a large home, but a large enough area to make daily vacuuming problematic, especially with my wife's disability and my work schedule.

The robot vacuum cleaners seem like a good option, but online reviews (as usual) seem to indicate purchasers love them, or hate them. I'm wondering if anyone here has any personal experience or knows anyone who does. They're on the pricey side, but maybe not so much when you consider the cost of a good old fashioned push model. Any input is appreciated.

Arrivederci gigi

Don't have one ourself, but yes have heard the same. The cheap one are cheap, junk.

The expensive one are good, but, they are expensive.

Not so good on fine dust. Gets stuck under the same piece of furniture or same corner repeatedly. Also, can't find it's way back to the charger. Told the wife that if she goes first, I'd hang it down range.

We have had two of them and I can't believe we (she) bought the second one. They don't really work that well, if you had and 8 ft square room with nothing in it, it could take hours for all of it to be gone over by the Roomba.

The random nature of the vacuum pattern is very inefficient, some areas get ten passes in ten minutes and some get none in an hour, especially in a room with a lot of furniture where the norm is NONE because it gets stuck under a table or chair like a pinball. One we (she) bought for our 35ft camper and it never did a good or complete job even in that small space and in a house it was laughable at best.

The holding bin is very small also. All things being equal you can vacuum with a regular vacuum twenty times faster with much better results.

It will end up in one of your closets behind the unused treadmill. Save the money and buy a new gun.

They're not "vacuums", they're low-level dust catchers. LOML got one and we turn it loose every now and then. Usually can't find it after an hour. It's turned up in strange places, hung up on something too big to sweep.

    I ignore it as best I can🙄

no personal experience but My oldest son told me a few years back ( not his ) if you have pets and it runs into a pile of poo .. well just say it uses the pile to coat all the floor in its path , that was several years ago and just the story his friend had passed on 😝

Thanx for the reviews folks. Sounds like we'll be way ahead buying more pads for the swiffer and filters for the shark. Much appreciated.

If you have a house cat I hear they make awesome play toys for them to chase and hitch rides on them!

  • sxsnufsxsnuf Member Posts: 2,952 ✭✭✭✭

Yeah, we have a housecat. She's a furball/butterball and contributes much to the need for regular vacuuming. She's a rescue kitty and has a deep seated fear of vacuum cleaners. I dont see it becoming an expensive cat toy.

They will go through a pile of dog chit and spread it all over the house.

"but a large enough area to make daily vacuuming problematic,"

Don't have to worry about that here. It's more like a semi-annual shoveling.

My wife loves hers and it is fun to watch. It does sweep up lots of stuff.

I wouldn't get one with the experience that are in laws had with the one we all pitched in and bought for them. Not perfected imo in any way. Hire a hot housekeeper instead.

I always wanted to get one but I figure it would last maybe 15 seconds with my 2 dogs.

I have two of them one for upstairs and one for downstairs. We auditioned various models and went with the Shark. They just clean in more regular patterns and have features that made the most sense.

Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

When I first heard the term Roomba, I thought it was a Spanish dance where the guy dips the girl low and has a rose in his mouth! 😁

    Got a pitbull? Don't get a Roomba.

  • asopasop Member Posts: 8,979 ✭✭✭✭

Don't bother. No capacity for holding any quanity of "dirt".

  • Nanuq907Nanuq907 Member Posts: 2,551 ✭✭✭✭

better yet all terrain tires and sharpen the edges of the sweep broom like an old push mower, and set it loose in the yard.

Our son gave us a Roomba 2 years ago. At first, I thought it was just another gadget with no real purpose. But now we use it to vacuum the master bedroom carpet and it is great! It goes under the bed and gets every speck of debris. Just two cautions: (1) make sure doors are closed and objects on the floor are up out of its way. It easily gets tangled up in blind pull cords. Also, if there are stairs, be sure to block them. (2) be sure to locate the charger station in an area the unit can easily reach. It needs to come straight in.

We have one up stairs and one down stairs. They work good. I am impressed.

Pass, not even close to a real vacuum and besides everyone can use some exercise..

Had one for 10 years. Wife loves it, because it makes all the floors look clean; I have it, because I am allergic to dust mites & I know it really doesn't clean anything, it just stirs things up. Routine maintenance is annoying; you have to empty the dust collector every time you use it, & I am constantly cleaning hair from the beater bar & brush bar.

If she just has to have one, buy it from Costco; their lifetime money back warranty might come in handy.
