CLP

I do not know what I was reading but what ever it was prompted me to buy a couple of pints of this.

I was cleaning an Ruger Sp 101 before I took it to give it to my Daughter In Law. It's in 327 Federal and she really likes it. It wasn't something I was going to part with but she shoots it well and I thought she should have it.

Back to my point. I cleaned the revolver with the CLP and I wasn't impressed. It seemed to take a lot of scrubbing even using a brass brush. It took some time to get it wiped off as well. I'll give it a few more tries before passing final judgement but I was expecting better. IIRC the fumes from this aren't as unhealthy as some other products and it is used by our military. The reviews on it were good.

Anyone care to share their opinion on this product?

I wish I could but haven't used it. Everybody I've heard comment on it seemed to like it's long lasting lubricating qualities though.

I don't use it for cleaning as much but I do use it for seasonal storage. It seems to have a better viscosity for that. You could call it "cling". Especially in the bore.

It's always seemed to work well for me cleaning aand lubrication uses I started using it many years ago and also use the long term storage version also seem to work well

I do seem tor recall some heavy carbon fouling it was not so great at a few times

But just guessed it was a very dirty rifle

I don't use CLP as a bore cleaner. I often use it as a final pass to prevent rust and/or slowly loosen any remaining fouling. Most of my use is gas rings and FCG pins in AR's.

Odor? What odor? I've not noticed such an issue but then my humungous jug of CLP was purchased a decade back. Maybe new production has more volatile juice in it.

I dabbed on a little hoppes on my neck and rubbed up against my Wife... She asked what I had on... I laughed for a few minutes before I could say what it was... then she said...you are not right...

Way back in the 80s when breakfree CLP was still kind of unknown and relatively inexpensive, we used to buy it in bulk size and use it as neutralizing bath after the clear water bluing bath. It did a great job of neutralizing the bluing salts that wanted to bleed out of soldered sight ramps and the like. It also worked good as a post-parkerizing oil bath.

    I see it's now about $99 a gallon on amazon....oh my gosh! 😳

I have been milking a gallon jug of it for years. Never really considered it a cleaner but have been impressed with its lubricity and rust prevention. I do believe it has made cleaning easier once treated.

I don't like it much and that is probably why there has been an unopened gallon of Breakfree CLP in my possession for over twenty years.

So better for maintenance than scrubbing dirty guns. For clarification I didn't notice an odor, that was one of the reasons I bought some, lack of harmful fumes.

I think it has a much milder odor than most.

As mentioned, CLP is a much better lubricant and protector than a bore cleaner.

Many years ago, SARCO sold surplus cases: 4 X1 gallon jugs, of CLP made by the Royal Chemical Company. It was military contract leftover from the Gulf War. I used it on every gun, lubricated every door hinge with it, every key lock, every tool, and sprayed it everywhere I heard a piece of metal squeak.

Good stuff, but it never replaced dedicated bore cleaner (USGI and Hoppes 9) on my shelf.
