What was I thinking...

Smitty500magSmitty500mag Member Posts: 13,623 ✭✭✭✭

I was thinking this was going to be a better year. But right off the bat it's starting all over.

Yesterday the refrigerator conked out and today the furnace went out. The control board needs to be replaced according to the diagram on the back of the door of the furnace that says for a continuous blinking trouble light that the control board is the problem.

I called my HVAC guy and of course he's in Miami this week and won't be here until Thursday. I sent him a picture of the serial number and manufacturer's number and model number along with the picture of the diagram. He said he would order it now and it should be here by the time he gets back.

I still feel like crap from the heart problems and climbing around in the attic didn't make me feel any better today. I'm still lightheaded as I was before the stents were put in my main artery in my heart week before last. Mom said that my dad's arteries we're 98% blocked in his neck so I'm guessing that'll be the next thing. I got to go back to the doctor on the 14th so I guess I'll find out after he does more testing.

About the only good thing is June is not suffering this year she's in a much better place. And my daughter-in-law and brother-in-law are both in remission with their cancer from last year. So that's at least some good news.

On the upside it's mostly mechanical crap that can be replaced but it just happens to be taking place during the coldest weather that we've had in a long time. It couldn't have happened last week when it was in the upper '70s. Nooooo let's just wait till it gets really cold so we'll make old man Greg suffer some more!

Looks like I'll be sleeping next to the gas stove with the oven door open for next couple of days. If you all happen to read about a big fire in Hampton Georgia you'll know what it was without having to read the whole story.

Did you ever wonder what would make people want to jump off of tall buildings? I'm beginning to understand really well what's on their mind.

Sounds like a power surge could have taken them both out. Call insurance

Yeah, listen to what S-F says. The power at my daughters place was blinking on and off. All of a sudden the aquastat on their boiler was fried. Burnt wires, blackened circuit board. The thermostat was fried too. There wasn't enough of a claim to make it worthwhile.

I didn't think of that. I'll have to check into it. I appreciate it SF.

Sometimes engineers overlook the simple things. Did you cycle the breaker to the furnace?

They still make electric blankets, so no need in sleeping next to the stove.

Rusty, My HVAC guy, called back just a few minutes ago from Florida and said he ordered the part. He said it didn't make any difference if he was here right now or not because the part wouldn't be there until Thursday or Friday morning.

So instead of camping out by the stove I went down in the basement and dug out some space heaters that I've had in storage for a few years and have them running and it feels pretty nice in here right now.

Finally something I didn't throw away that I can use again. Normally I would have given those away or thrown them away years ago but I decided to keep them, glad I did now. I had them wrapped up and they're in good shape so I think they're pretty safe, probably safer than a gas stove blazing away.

I wish June was still here I'd tell her see there, I told you we might need them again someday. Ha she was always giving me a hard time about keeping stuff and not ever needing it.

NN...you're probably right about not being enough money involved to contact the insurance company. Rusty said it would be about $250 bucks to repair the furnace and since there's only one of me living here these days I've got another refrigerator so I'm not going to worry about it. The one that crapped out It's already lasted longer than I figured it would. We bought it back in '95 so about 27 years is a pretty good run for it.

I plan on moving back to Knoxville Tennessee anyway within the next year or so after I get the rest of my medical problems worked out and get the house in condition to sell unless I kick the bucket in the meantime.

My mom's 91 years old and while she's still sharp as a tack she just don't get around as good as she used to so my sister can use some help with her.

My youngest son is wanting me to come and live with him out in Seattle and my oldest son is wanting me to come to work for him in Knoxville since I've been around construction management most of my life and watch over some projects that he has going on with his company. Going back to work is not high on my list of things to do. Anyway I got to get over these health issues first before I do anything.

My furnace control board took a crap too. My furnace is 20 years old and the part is no longer available. Bummer!

  • Smitty500magSmitty500mag Member Posts: 13,623 ✭✭✭✭

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like it lasted about as long as they planned for it too.

Luckily mine is 11 years old or it would be obsolete also. Actually I'm surprised they had parts for it after 10 years.

Hang in there… Lucky you are down south.

    Here, It’s cold out.

    How cold is it Johnny?

It's so cold...it's so cold that the peacock is sleeping with his tail on the heated pet mat instead of in the tree. (18 degrees now)

Glad the trees and power lines didn’t ice up.

Keep going Smitty, hoping it’s just some 2021 hangover happening there!

    Hey BikerBob,

Yep I'm glad I'm not in 18° weather but it's still pretty chilly here when you're not used to it.

According to the national weather service it's 30° here at 11:15 p.m.

3 nights ago it was 71° at 12:15 a.m. according to the national weather service. It was 72 by my thermometer so it was pretty close. The high was 78 during the day which they said was a record high.

    Lol that’s a good one.

Glad you stayed warm overnight. 30 is colder than I had expected for your neck of the woods!

A few years back I use to evaluate/repair/test control circuit boards for many garage/gate door and HVAC service contractors.

    I specialized in out-of-date/out-of-production equipment.

I may be able to help......as having a spare control circuit board, when you need one, is very handy.

Message me if you think I may be able to help.

Yep Jim I've worked the breaker and hit the reset button a number of times and stomped my feet and said a few curse words and the trouble light still just blinks at me.

In my younger days I would have used my fine tuning tool on it, a large hammer, but that gets expensive and I learned better over the years.

I was going ask if you had electric heaters then I read your post last night about digging them out. I have some of those but usually if my heat is out it's because the electricity is out. I have one of the double Mr. Heater propane units. It's supposed to be safe indoors. I'm still careful with it and would question using it in a small space. it works well when I need it.

You might want to look at the sensors to protect the unit if it overheats. Usually two little rd sensors. If one goes out the furnace will not work. You can unplug them one at a time and use a jumper wire to the plug in for it. Try each one.. you might get lucky .

Smitty, sorry to hear you are having trouble with your heater. Wish I lived closer and could get her running for ya all. Now, about your stents. You were dizzy after having them put in???? I have seven and never a problem. Could be the meds. They make me feel light headed and winded sometimes. Hope all goes better. Oak

    Hello there Okie,

Nice to hear from you. I appreciate the well wishes.

I'm sorry to say there is no "ya'll" here anymore. June passed on in October. It's just me now. You probably didn't see any of my earlier posts about her battle with cancer.

Anywho, yes I'm still light-headed after the stints were put in. The light-headedness was the reason I went to the walk-in clinic to begin with back a few weeks ago. The doctor there did an EKG and she said something wasn't right that I had better go to the emergency room so I did that evening. That's where they finally discovered the 100% blockage in my widowmaker's artery that they call it. They went in and tried to put stents in at the Piedmont hospital in Fayetteville but they didn't have the equipment or back up team to do the one in the main artery that was 100% blocked. So they sent me to the Piedmont hospital in Atlanta where they had the equipment and team to do surgery if something went wrong. I asked the same thing that you're probably thinking is how can someone live with a main artery 100% blocked? Doctor said the old ticker had found a different route to route my blood which is amazing to me. I didn't know a body could do something like that.

According to my mom my dad when he was alive had 98% blockage in one of his carotid arteries in his neck and 90% in the other artery in his neck. So I have a feeling that's where my problem might be. I have an appointment with the cardiologist in about a week so I'll see what he has to say.

I dread going back to the doctor or hospital anymore since the virus has reared it's ugly head again. I had a good friend that just died from the virus 4 days after June died and my next door neighbor's wife and grandson came down with it last week. They seem to be doing fine now which I'm thankful for. They've been a God send for me during this past year and a half. Jeff, my neighbor, has mowed my lawn and trimmed the hedges during this whole time. He and his wife Dorothy have called me everyday to check on me since I've been sick and I'm here by myself to make sure I'm still alive and to see if I need anything.

I've been very lucky to not catch the virus so far since June was in the hospital 10 times during her surgeries and internal bleeding problems, etc with the cancer during that year and a half battle and the hospitals were full of virus patients at that time.

Well Okie, sorry to talk to your leg off but I got nothing to do but goof off until I finally get over this whatever it is. I hope you're doing good these days and thanks again for wishing me well.

Well, it sucks to start the year with these problems, but it looks like you've gotten things sorted pretty quickly. Good! Hope the rest of the year goes better for you!
