How Can I Withdraw a Faulty Gun From active Auction

Maxx1943Maxx1943 Member Posts: 6

I am new to Gun Broker and have posted listing 920666798 for sale of an antique bolt action 1895 Mauser Chileno that was re-chambered in 308 Nato. I have since found out that the chamber is badly soldered in which could result in a Catastrophic or Fatal Explosion when fired.

since there are active bids on the rifle I am not able to edit or add comments or withdraw the listing.

I can't complete a transaction on a Rifle that I now know is dangerous. Any Advice on How I can withdraw this listing would be helpful.

I have repeatedly sent emails to customer support and have had zero response or help.

The only thing I can tell you is that each time you send an email to GB, your case goes to the end of the line, so don't send any more, just wait for a response.

Nope, once there are bids on it you can only add to the description. Go into the auction and add what you feel is necessary information, and also that you will not sell the item. File an auction claim with gb and explain the issue. I'm sure that they will eventually work things out. They're good to work with, just slow. Good luck.

You can "add to the description". Write in all caps that you are stopping the auction and then explain why.

If the auction ends with a high bidder, you may have to contact that bidder and apologize and ask him pretty please to not leave you bad feedback.

Ok I think you are doing a great thing by attempting to prevent the sale of a potentially defective firearm, but I have to ask. Can you explain the "badly soldered in" chamber issue? Thats not how mauser rifles are built. Of course clambering a 95 to a high pressure cartridge is questionable to begin with, but I am very curious as to the soldering that was done to contain a 50,000 + psi cartridge.

At the worst, you could, after putting a full update in the description, put a higher bid in to release the other bids. You would at most be out the commission fee. If you feel it is that dangerous, it would be a small price to pay to keep someone from getting hurt.

Add to the description like Ricci said, and also email each bidder and warn them of the issue.

Thanks Guys for the advice I have added to the description as some of you recommended:

I HAVE TO END THE AUCTION FOR THIS OLD MAUSER RIFLE

I have now been advised by a Gunsmith that this rifle was NOT Properly Re-barreled from the original 8mm to the CURRENT 308 NATO but was instead Re-Chambered by Silver Soldering a 308 size chamber into it. The Badly Soldered in chambers have been known to come loose and cause CATASTROPHIC FATAL FAILURE EXPLOSION WHEN FIRED

I apologize for any inconvenience to the bidders , please don't place anymore bids and I have asked the support to please end the auction and remove the add.

Information above was added on 1/10/2022 7:50:42 PM

1895 Mauser Chileno chambered for 7.62 NATO manufactured in Loewe Berlin

extremely accurate, I was able to consistently hit the Steel White Buffalo Target (1123 yards) at the NRA Whitting Center in Raton New Mexico using the Iron Sights and factory Nato ammo.

so now where can I find each bidders email address so I can notify them in case they don't see the addition to the description

Well I'm not totally sure you can until after the auction sells. As a bidder, I could go to "Ask seller a question" and contact you by email through GunBroker. As a seller I'm not sure that can happen before an auction sells. Maybe some of the sellers here will chime in.

They can only contact you through "Ask the seller a question." You cannot contact them directly.

These sorts of things do happen. You are doing as much as you can within the limits of what the auction site allows. I think it will all turn out alright.

    Thanx Guys, for the help

I'm new to the forum and feel bad about having problems with one of my first transactions. Good ole Murphy strikes again. If anything can go wrong it will (sometimes)

I plan on selling some more guns here soon, seems like a good market place to put buyers and sellers together.

Make sure you plug your auctions here in the forum.

You might even update the description one more time with a link to this thread. That way, anyone with a gripe could come looking here for a longer explanation as to what went down. Kudos to you for trying to do the right thing. I hope it all goes well for you. We need more honest sellers like you.

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on trying to withdraw my auction listing for the potential faulty dangerous rifle.

Unfortunately the High bidder never read the updated description explaining the need to stop the auction . He got all bent out of shape when I let him know after the auction ended that the gun had been parted out and the dangerous Barrel was thrown away. He left negative feed back against me saying I refused to complete the transaction and cut off communication with him. I guess I can live with a little sniveling feed back better than I could live with a guilty conscious if I had knowingly sold a dangerous faulty explosive rifle to an unsuspecting buyer.

They say "guns don't kill people, people kill people"...but in some cases guns with faulty barrels do explode and kill people.

Your choice but I would email Gunbroker Support asking that they remove the negative feedback and explain why. If you are a new seller with negative feedback that could dissuade potential bidders.

What Ricci said. It seems like GB is fairly good about removing unjust negative feedback.

The description reads that this 8mm Mauser was "Re-Chambered by Silver Soldering a 308 size chamber into it." OK, so even if it would chamber & fire a .308, wouldn't the bullet just pass down the .324 / .311 bore without the benefit of rifling? Could this be a 308-8mm wildcat?

  • kannoneerkannoneer Member Posts: 3,395 ✭✭✭✭

Something seems odd here. If the chamber was bored out and a replacement silver soldered in, the rifle would be very inaccurate due to the larger bore size. Yet it states that the owner was able to hit a buffalo target at 1100 yards. This makes me think that the rifle was, in fact, rebarreled.

But, stupid things have happened. I think I read in P.O. Ackley's book about a rifle he examined which had been rechambered from .243 to .308. The problem was the bore was left in .243 cal.! They fired it and the bullets were swaging down to .24 without blowing anything up but he said recovered bullets were far longer than normal.

For future reference, you can contact Support, mid-auction, and ask them to cancel bids and stop the auction. I've done it a couple of times, for just the reason you described: A serious defect in the item not apparent until after there were bids on it.

You may also contact Support on your current issue. Explain the situation in detail, and ask them to remove the negative feedback. It won't cost you anything, and it may work. You may also want them to refund taxes and fees.

    Be nice and be patient.
