NEW YORK (AP) — Cheslie Kryst, the 2019 winner of the Miss USA pageant and a correspondent for the entertainment news program “Extra,” has died at age 30.
Police said Kryst jumped from a Manhattan apartment building and was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday morning. Her family confirmed her death in a statement.
“In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie,” the statement said.
“Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength. She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined. Cheslie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA and as a host on EXTRA. But most importantly, as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor and colleague – we know her impact will live on," her family said.
Kryst, a former Division I athlete and North Carolina attorney, won the Miss USA pageant in May, 2019, and competed in the Miss Universe pageant that year. When Kryst was crowned, it marked more than a personal triumph: It meant that for the first time, three Black women were the reigning Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America.
In a statement Sunday, the nationally syndicated program “Extra” called Kryst “not just a vital part of our show, she was a beloved part of our Extra family and touched the entire staff. Our deepest condolences to all her family and friends.”
University of South Carolina mourned the former student-athlete, calling her “a woman of many talents.” Kryst also held an MBA from Wake Forest University.
Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina recalled meeting with Kryst in 2019 to discuss issues affecting their home state.
According to police, Kryst's body was found at approximately 7 a.m. Sunday in front of the Orion building, a high-rise on West 42nd Street in midtown Manhattan.

It is sad when anyone does something like this. We will never know what drove her to commit suicide and adopt a permanent solution to what was probably a temporary problem. RIP Miss U.S.A. Bob
From the outside looking in, it seems she had alot going for her. Oh, the things we'll never know.
Would like to know if she was suicidal or was she pushed? The easiest way to get away with murder is for it to ruled anything other than murder. I know; I watch too many true crime shows.
Strange that at the age of 28 she was an active beauty contestant, most are way past their prime competing age at 28 but she won then turned around and lost the most important contest of all.....life. Sad ending ☹️

jumped, or pushed
Sad.
I dated Miss Alaska for 6 years, and those women are under enormous pressure. And that was before social media. I've read that little girls are HORRIBLE to each other online, and that leads to bulimia, anorexia, disorders out the wazzoo, bullying... all very good reasons for your kids NOT to have a mobile phone. Let them borrow the family phone as needed.
I hope it wasn't bullying and harassment that made this poor girl end her life. When your life is based on your looks, you don't have a real rosy outlook in the decades to come. Which is why I memorized this when I was looking for a wife:
The Wallflower
Till midnight her needle she plied
To finish her pretty pink dress;
"Oh, bless you, my darling," she sighed;
"I hope you will be a success."
As she entered the Oddfellow's Hall
With the shy thrill of maiden romance
She felt like the belle of the Ball,
But . . . nobody asked her to dance.
Her programme was clutched in her hand;
Her smile was a tiny bit wan;
She listened, applauding the band,
Pretending she liked to look on.
Each girl had her favourite swain,
She watched them retreat and advance;
She waited and waited in vain,
but nobody asked her to dance.
Said Mother to me: "You'll agree
That any young girl who wears specs,
however so clever she be,
Is lacking in glamour of sex."
Said I: "There is one by the wall
Who doesn't seem having a chance.
She's ready to weep - Dash it all,
I'm going to ask her to dance."
I caught her just slipping away
So quietly no one would know;
But bravely she tried to seem gay,
Though her heart might be aching with woe.
Poor kid! She looked only sixteen,
And she gave me a half frightened glance
When I bowed as if she were Queen,
And I begged: "May I please have this dance?"
She gave me her card: what a bluff!
She'd written "Sir G." and "Sir G."
So I cut out that Galahad stuff,
And I scribbled "M.E" and "M.E.";
She looked so forlorn and so frail,
Submitting like one in a trance,
So I acted the conquering male,
And guided her into the dance.
Then lo! to my joy and surprise
Her waltzing I found was divine;
And she took those damn specs from her eyes,
And behold they were jewels all a-shine;
No lipstick nor rouge she had on,
But no powder or paint could enhance
On her cheeks the twin roses shone
As I had with her dance after dance.
Then all of a sudden I knew
As we waltzed and reversed round the hall
That all eyes were watching us two,
And that she was the Belle of the Ball.
The fellows came buzzing like bees,
With swagger and posture and prance,
But her programme was full of "M.E."s,
So she couldn't afford them a dance.
Said mother: "You've been a nice boy,
And had a good time I suppose.
You've filled that poor kid's heart with joy,
From now she'll have plenty of beaus."
So fellows, please listen to me:
Don't look at a wallflower askance;
If a girl sitting lonely you see,
Just bow, smile and beg for a dance.
Single, Black, woman, attorney, beauty contestant, social justice warrior. Sounds to me like six ingredients to bake a nut cake.
More to the story no doubt.
I hope she can find peace in the after life.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

Somebody been watching Lethal Weapon.
IMO, it takes a lot of guts to go out that way!
I think it takes more guts to fight your demons and overcome your issues. (No disrespect intended Brookwood).

We never know the demons that another is fighting. Four years ago I lost my younger brother to suicide . On the outside he never showed any symptoms or problems . May God have mercy on her soul .
With that snow blizzard happening... maybe she wanted to make a 29 story jump to make a snow angel.
